The S&P 500 scaled to a fresh record high on Friday, adding to its weekly gains, as traders digested more earnings.<\/p>\n

3M<\/a> shares rose more than 2% on the back of a second-quarter earnings beat. Netflix<\/a> fell more than 1% in extended trading following its latest quarterly results<\/a>. The company posted an earnings and revenue beat for the second quarter and raised its full-year revenue forecast.<\/p>\n

The moves come after Wall Street saw a winning day. The S&P 500<\/a> finished 0.5% higher, closing at a new record after hitting an all-time high during the session. The Nasdaq Composite<\/a> gained about 0.7%, also reaching fresh intraday and closing records. The Dow<\/a> climbed 0.5%.<\/p>\n

Wall Street is on pace for a positive week, bolstered by optimism surrounding the latest earnings results. On Thursday, PepsiCo<\/a> and United Airlines<\/a> shares both popped after the respective<\/a> companies<\/a> beat analyst estimates on earnings. Those follow solid results from big banks like JPMorgan<\/a> and Goldman Sachs<\/a> earlier in the week.<\/p>\n

Data pointing to a strong U.S. economy also lifted the major stock benchmarks on Thursday.<\/p>\n

“I think this market deserves the benefit of the doubt, and what got you here is still the growth sectors,” Keith Lerner, co-chief investment officer and chief market strategist at Truist, said on CNBC’s “Closing Bell<\/a>.” “We would stick with the underlying trend, which still seems positive in our world,” he continued.<\/p>\n

The S&P 500 is up 0.6% for the week through Thursday’s close and the 30-stock Dow on track for a 0.3% advance.
