A handful of new rule proposals for the 2026 NFL season<\/a> have been made and will soon be voted on.<\/p>\n

According to ESPN’s<\/a> Adam Schefter, the NFL’s competition committee has proposed five potential rule changes for the 32 NFL teams to consider.<\/p>\n

These proposed changes will be discussed and then voted on at the NFL’s league meetings<\/a>, which take place in Phoenix, Arizona, from March 29th through April 1st.<\/p>\n

Below are the proposed changes, according to Schefter:<\/p>\n

1. Permit the kicking team to declare an onside kick at any time during the game.<\/p>\n

2. Eliminate the kicking team\u2019s incentive to intentionally kick the ball out of bounds when kicking off from the 50-yard line.<\/p>\n

3. Modify the kickoff alignment requirements for the receiving team in the setup zone.<\/p>\n

4. Allow League personnel to consult with on-field officials when considering disqualifications for both flagrant football acts and non-football acts without being called on the field.<\/p>\n

5. For one year only, allow the NFL Officiating Department to correct clear and obvious misses by on-field officials that impact the game, in the event of a work stoppage involving the game officials represented by the NFL Referees Association.<\/p>\n

This process, which the NFL is currently going through, where they evaluate potential rules changes, takes place on a yearly basis.<\/p>\n

“The NFL\u2019s process for modifying or adopting rules and regulations is systematic and consensus-oriented,” it says on the NFL Football Operations<\/a> site. “The Competition Committee reviews all competitive aspects of the game, including (but not limited to) playing rules, roster regulations, technology, game-day operations and player protection.”<\/p>\n
