A driver police have called an \u201cabsolute menace\u201d on the road has been arrested after ramming into police cruisers in Brampton.<\/p>\n

Peel Regional Police spokesperson Const. Tyler Bell-Morena says officers have tried to stop the same driver \u201cnumerous times\u201d in recent weeks.<\/p>\n

Each time, the driver has fled from police \u2013 \u201cmounting curbs, driving into oncoming traffic, (and) sidewalks at high rates of speed, with no care for anybody but himself,\u201d Bell-Morena said in a video statement.<\/p>\n

But police say they finally caught up with the alleged driver last Thursday, after an automated licence plate reader notified officers of a prohibited driver near Bovaird Drive and Sunforest Drive in Brampton.<\/p>\n

Video of the takedown released by police shows cruisers surround the driver\u2019s vehicle before the driver goes into reverse, ramming into one of the cruisers.<\/p>\n

Police say the driver \u201ctried to ram his way through,\u201d but was taken into custody and charged with \u201ca litany\u201d of offences. He was also in possession of a replica firearm at the time of the incident, investigators say.<\/p>\n

Peel police say Iqbal Dhatt, 34, of Brampton, has been charged with two counts each of flight from police and dangerous operation, along with mischief over $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, drive under suspension, among other offences.<\/p>\n

The accused was allegedly involved in three prior incidents where he fled from police and \u201cplaced the public at significant risk,\u201d police say. He is also now the subject of an immigration investigation by the Canada Border Services Agency.<\/p>\n
