I, regrettably, never lived through the \u201970s, but I do find myself nostalgic for its wild textures and low-slung seats. I imagine returning home from a long night at the disco, pushing past a curtain of beads, and sinking into something plush to watch the gooey ebbs and flows of a lava lamp. Whilst exploring what’s new in at IKEA<\/a>, the DYVLINGE corduroy chair seems to be scratching that itch, clich\u00e9s and all.<\/p>\n

Originally designed in 1967 by Gillis Lundgren<\/a> (a name you might recognize, having also dreamt up the still-iconic BILLY bookcase<\/a>), the chair was fairly avant-garde for its time. Debuting in IKEA<\/a>\u2019s catalog under the name \u2018MILA,\u2019 this button-tufted corduroy swivel was positioned as an \u2018anti-stress armchair.\u2019<\/p>\n

Everyone loves this archival Gillis Lundgren design turned current IKEA favorite, though not everyone shares a taste for its original electric orange. This new beige colorway offers a softer, more minimal approach. Also available in black and green, it\u2019s rated 4.5 out of 5 stars across more than 400 reviews, regardless of chroma.<\/p>\n

Fifty-some-odd years later, it seems to have the same effect. \u2018I don\u2019t usually provide reviews for IKEA (though I love the products). BUT, I walked into the store for something else and tried this lounge chair,\u2019 writes one reviewer. \u2018It was so comfortable that I felt I was melting away in it, so I decided to get one, though I don\u2019t need one\u2026 The installable took 2 mins, so extra points!\u2019<\/p>\n

From setup to sitting, IKEA\u2019s DYVLINGE<\/a> brings a kind of ease only the \u201970s could deliver \u2013 and thankfully, it\u2019s back.<\/p>\n

Now revived in a brand-new beige colorway as part of the Nytillverkad<\/a> collection, which has resurrected several IKEA classics, the retro style<\/a> still reads as a total time capsule. It keeps that slightly reclined, TV-optimized posture and a surprising stability, thanks to its unusual five-leg base \u2013 perfect for The Brady Bunch (1969-1974) then, or a Heated Rivalry (2025)-adjacent miniseries now.<\/p>\n

I imagine it back in similar company: a living room<\/a> full of otherwise sensible seating, interrupted by one electric hit (orange, green, black, beige \u2013 whichever you prefer), somehow still cooler than the rest. Probably in some sort of ambery haze, too \u2013 then, it might have been tinted glass and cigarettes; now, color-changing light bulbs<\/a> do the trick, recreating endless iterations of that same nostalgic glow.<\/p>\n

They just don\u2019t make \u2019em like they used to. Except, in this case, they actually do.<\/p>\n

How I’d Style It <\/p>\n

If a \u201970s version of me got loose in IKEA after securing this unreasonably comfortable seat, here\u2019s what I imagine I\u2019d end up with.<\/p>\n

Chrome<\/a> was another very \u201970s design trend<\/a> \u2013 and, conveniently, it\u2019s back in rotation \u2013 so it feels simpatico with this seating. Originally designed by Karin Mobring (IKEA\u2019s first female designer) and debuted in 1971, this table is \u2013 and always will be \u2013 a functional icon: book stacks below, drinks up top.<\/p>\n

Beige and blue is an offbeat color combo that’s seeing a second coming, so I\u2019d offset the stark white side table with this sky-toned stoneware vase. Designed in 1995,\u00a0those grooves have become part of IKEA\u2019s visual language. Flowers, here, are optional.<\/p>\n

It would feel strange to recreate this ambery-tinged moment without an equally ambery light. IKEA\u2019s original Varmblixt<\/a> made its mark with that viral, orange-only glow, but one of the perks of it being 2026 is that lighting is smarter. This updated version<\/a> can shift through any warm glow you want, making your new corduroy seat all the more inviting.<\/p>\n
