The program is being called the AI Dividend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For the moment, the small program reportedly involves somewhere between 25 and 50 people receiving $1,000 per month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">AI-related layoffs, along with other negative impacts of AI on jobs, are touchy topics right now. Epic Games, for instance, took pains to say that when it laid off over 1,000 people, the move <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/epic-games-laying-off-1000-employees-swears-ai-is-not-to-blame-2000737581\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was not a play to replace workers with AI<\/a>. At the same time, replacing workers with AI is such a buzzy concept on Wall Street that the concept of \u201cAI washing\u201d layoffs\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/sam-altman-says-companies-are-ai-washing-layoffs-2000724759\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coined by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself<\/a>\u2014is now in the zeitgeist, referring to the practice of laying off workers to save money for non-AI reasons but then retrofitting an AI explanation onto the strategy as a way of pleasing shareholders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The very idea of an \u201cAI dividend\u201d is bound to chafe some AI critics as well. Altman has supported the idea of universal basic income (UBI)\u2014the general term for no-strings-attached payments to cover people\u2019s core needs\u2014as a remedy for potential societal damage wrought by the proliferation of AI. He has even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sam-altman-universal-basic-income-study-open-research\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">funded at least one experiment<\/a> into the effects of UBI. Altman\u2019s main rival, Anthropic\u2019s Dario Amodei, has called UBI \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/anthropic-ceo-dario-amodei-universal-basic-income-ubi-ai-inequality-2024-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better than nothing<\/a>,\u201d but also said he would prefer a society where \u201ceveryone can contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Two groups have teamed up on this recent basic income project:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwrise.org\/about-us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What We Will<\/a>, a general advocacy group for AI-impacted workers, and more the basic income-focused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aicommonsproject.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI Commons Project<\/a>\u2014itself a subsidiary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/f4gi.org\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fund for Guaranteed Income<\/a>.
