snowstorm on Wednesday<\/a> brought slippery roads and reduced visibility, leading to a chaotic morning commute.<\/p>\nJordan Fraser, owner of Fountain Tire Crowfoot, says his shop saw several early tire\u2011change appointments over the weekend, a mix of eager planners and people dealing with worn\u2011out winter sets.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes if they run into an issue with their current winter tires, they get their summer tires on early,\u201d Fraser said.<\/p>\n
For Calgarians like Malik Addi, now in his third winter in the city, the timing is never straightforward.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause this is Calgary and here, unexpectedly snow, so you have to be careful until I think April 15th,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Others take an even more cautious approach. Michael Johnson, who was having a new set of all\u2011weather tires installed, said he wouldn\u2019t dream of switching to all\u2011seasons before early summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cJune 1st,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not joking about May long weekend being the last snowfall of the year, so you\u2019re taking your chances.\u201d<\/p>\n
For drivers worried about damaging their winter tires by keeping them on too long, Fraser says there\u2019s little risk until temperatures consistently rise.<\/p>\n
He notes that winter tires only begin to wear prematurely once street temperatures climb above 7 C.<\/p>\n
\u201cLeaving your winters on a little bit longer isn\u2019t going to cause any unnecessary wear on them until you really get into like end of May, early or mid\u2011June,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
