{"id":563051,"date":"2026-03-26T23:03:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T23:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/563051\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T23:03:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T23:03:15","slug":"25k-in-jewelry-bought-with-stolen-credit-cards-in-mississauga-man-faces-rash-of-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/563051\/","title":{"rendered":"$25K in jewelry bought with stolen credit cards in Mississauga; man faces rash of charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Montreal man faces fraud and other charges after credit cards were stolen from two people in Toronto and subsequently used to buy $25,000 worth of jewelry in Mississauga.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto Police said the victims were tricked into handing over their credit cards by a man posing as a bank employee.<\/p>\n<p>In both cases, the victims received a phone call last October from a man claiming to work at their respective banks. They were each told their credit cards had been compromised and arrangements were made for them to turn over their cards.<\/p>\n<p>The man then sent a courier to pick up the victims\u2019 credit cards from their Toronto homes, police said in an earlier news release.<\/p>\n<p>The credit cards were subsequently used at either one or two jewelry stores in Mississauga, added police, who didn\u2019t say if the same shop was visited on both occasions.<\/p>\n<p>After the first credit card was obtained following an Oct. 1 call to one of the victims, it was then used to purchase $11,000 worth of jewelry, according to investigators.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidyard-player-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774544471_208_awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu.jpg\" data-videoid=\"790139\" data-uuid=\"awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu\" data-v=\"4\" data-type=\"inline\" data-muted=\"1\" style=\"width:100%\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>        <img width=\"1024\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-30-at-1.55.02-PM-1024x513.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>      <\/p>\n<p>Police said $14,000 in jewelry was then bought following the second fraudulent phone call, which was made on Oct. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto Police said in a news release issued Thursday afternoon they\u2019ve made an arrest in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Abdel Madjid Benmaou, 20, of Montreal, is charged with:<\/p>\n<p>Two counts of false pretences<br \/>\nThree counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000<br \/>\nThree counts of possess\/use credit card obtained by offence<br \/>\nThree counts of unauthorized use of credit card data<br \/>\nTwo counts of fraud over $5,000<br \/>\nOne count of fraud under $5,000<br \/>\nTwo counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000<\/p>\n<p>The accused is scheduled to appear in Toronto court on April 23.<\/p>\n<p>Police believe there may be more victims.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-5500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-804025\" class=\"wp-image-804025 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Man-from-Montreal-arrested-in-fraud-related-to-Missy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"561\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-804025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abdel Madjid Benmaou, 20, of Montreal.
