Unfortunately for anyone hoping this year’s model would come with a slimmer chassis, it seems like the brand is moving in the opposite direction.

The folks at Xpertpick, in partnership with OnLeaks, published a handful of CAD renders showing off what this year’s flagship Razr should look like when it launches in the coming months, and on its face, it’s a pretty familiar design. Motorola hasn’t rocked the boat on its overall foldable aesthetic since expanding its cover display across the entire front of the phone in 2024, and it looks like that core look is sticking around for a third generation. However, the Razr Ultra 2026 — or Razr 70 Ultra, as it’ll be called outside of North America — has made one change, and it might frustrate some potential upgraders.

According to these leaks, the dimensions of this year’s Razr Ultra come in at 88.0 x 74.1 x 15.8mm when folded and 171.3 x 74.1 x 7.8mm when not. Eagle-eyed readers might note those numbers look pretty familiar — not to mention pretty bulky, especially when compared to modern book-style foldables — but it’s worse than you might think. While plenty of Moto fans might’ve expected the company to finally slim down its clamshell design this year, those dimensions show off a thicker phone than its direct predecessor. In other words, we’re moving in the wrong direction.

I don’t want to sound overdramatic, so to be clear, we’re talking about a pretty minor difference compared to last year’s Razr Ultra: 0.6mm when open, and just 0.1mm when folded shut. Still, this is Motorola bucking the overall trend we’ve seen from foldable makers attempting to make their devices slimmer and lighter. It’s a style that has mostly affected book-style phones — like Motorola’s upcoming Razr Fold, which is just 10.1mm when closed — but hasn’t completely passed clamshells by.

Advertisement – scroll for more content

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7, for example, did slim down by more a millimeter compared to its predecessor when it launched last year, and early rumors indicate the brand might be trying to accomplish a similar feat at Unpacked this summer. The Flip 7 is already sub-14mm, meaning Motorola’s 2026 release could end up feeling pretty chunky in comparison.

Of course, we don’t know why Motorola decided to make its Razr Ultra bulkier this year rather than chasing a slim chassis, and from a more optimistic perspective, it could lead to some more exciting elements. Perhaps this year’s flagship Razr now supports Qi2, or features a larger battery or better camera sensors. There are plenty of potential trade-offs that could lead to a more exciting — albeit still thick — device. Fingers crossed we won’t be waiting too much longer to find out.

FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. More.

Hot on the heels of our first look at the entry-level Moto Razr earlier this month, we’re getting…

[6
49,48,61
0":"post-563433","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-technology","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-technology
["GET
