Adam Silver celebrated the WNBA\u2019s new collective bargaining agreement and praised the \u201cfantastic job\u201d performed by Cathy Engelbert during her 6 1\/2 years \u200bas that league\u2019s commissioner.<\/p>\n
That said, the NBA \u200ccommissioner was noncommittal in regard to Engelbert\u2019s long-term job security when speaking at his league\u2019s Board of Governors meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe haven\u2019t had those discussions yet with the WNBA \u200cboard,\u201d \u200bSilver said when asked about \u2060her future beyond the \u20602026 season. \u201cI would only say Cathy has done a fantastic job since she\u2019s come to the WNBA. Obviously, you could see (that) in the results.\u201d<\/p>\n
Silver \u200balso said he had spoken with others who were happy with the end result of the \u2060WNBA\u2019s eight-day marathon bargaining sessions.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople \u2060were very pleased with where we \u200bcame out on the WNBA side,\u201d Silver said. \u201cI\u2019ve talked \u200bto many players directly, read the reports coming \u200cout of collective bargaining. I\u2019m really pleased that both sides feel that it\u2019s a fair outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n
It hasn\u2019t all been rosy in regard to Engelbert, who \u2060publicly was challenged on Sept. 30 by Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier.<\/p>\n
Collier, a former Women\u2019s National Basketball Players Association \u2060vice president, said \u201cthe \u200clack of accountability from the league \u2060office\u201d was a real threat to \u200bthe \u200cleague. She also said the WNBA had \u200bthe \u201cworst leadership \u2060in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Engelbert, 61, also has been taken to task for the decision to sell a 16 percent stake in the league for $75 million in 2022 when the WNBA was in need of financial \u200bgains.<\/p>\n
