The mother of NASCAR<\/a> star Denny Hamlin<\/a> says there was no water to stop the fire that killed her husband.<\/p>\n Mary Lou Hamlin delivered an emotional plea to officials in Gaston County, North Carolina, this week, recounting the December blaze that turned deadly and calling for urgent changes to local fire response.<\/p>\n \u201cDec. 28 was one of the saddest days of my life,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was the last time I saw my husband of 52 years, when I pulled him out of our burning home.\u201d<\/p>\n The fire broke out at the couple\u2019s home on Blacksnake Road and quickly escalated. Dennis Hamlin later died from injuries sustained in the blaze. Mary Lou Hamlin survived with burns.<\/p>\n \u2018There Was No Water to Put Out My House\u2019<\/p>\n Hamlin\u2019s testimony centered on what she described as a critical breakdown during the response.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t understand at the time that the fire trucks were there but not the water,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was no water to put out my house.\u201d<\/p>\n Her message to county commissioners was direct. Funding is needed now.<\/p>\n \u201cI am advocating for funding<\/a> to be included in this year\u2019s budget,\u201d she said. \u201cTraining on emergency response, additional equipment, staffing are just a few of the things to help strengthen the fire protection in our area, in which funds are desperately needed.\u201d<\/p>\n Then she repeated her request, making sure it landed.<\/p>\n \u201cPlease, please, please help by including funds for your budget this year.\u201d<\/p>\n A Devastating Loss, and a Warning<\/p>\n The fire destroyed much of the home, leaving little behind. Along with her husband, Hamlin<\/a> said the family lost pets and nearly everything inside.<\/p>\n Her daughter, Lisa Chapman, described what she saw when crews arrived.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s nothing worse than pulling up to the fire, to the house on fire, partially on fire, and seeing everybody standing in the road with no water being thrown on the fire,\u201d Chapman said.<\/p>\n She added that while her father could not have been saved, other losses might have been prevented.<\/p>\n Beyond NASCAR<\/p>\n The Hamlin<\/a> name carries weight in NASCAR<\/a>, but this moment has moved beyond racing.
