{"id":565895,"date":"2026-03-28T05:23:47","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T05:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/565895\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T05:23:47","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T05:23:47","slug":"new-rules-and-changes-to-look-out-for-in-edmonton-this-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/565895\/","title":{"rendered":"New rules and changes to look out for in Edmonton this spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a new season on the way, new rules and changes are set to take effect in Edmonton.<\/p>\n<p>From new rules for pets and pet owners to property taxes and annual street sweeping measures, you may want to stay up to date on anything that could affect you.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some new rules and changes you can expect in Edmonton this spring.<\/p>\n<p>New Animal Care and Control Bylaw<br \/>\n<img alt=\"\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2256458\" style=\"color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shutterstock_2448610141.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2256458\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Romanchini\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/edmonton\/edmonton-animal-control-bylaw-changes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Changes to the City\u2019s Animal Care and Control Bylaw<\/a> will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/residential_neighbourhoods\/pets_wildlife\/owning-a-pet-in-edmonton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">go into effect on May 19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These changes include tougher rules for dog attacks, new rules to protect animals from harm and health-threatening situations, new regulations on roaming cats, new licensing categories and changes in fees, including reduced fees for seniors and non-profit animal rescues.<\/p>\n<p>Property Tax and Assessments<br \/>\n<img alt=\"\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"562\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2256459\" style=\"color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shutterstock_2457060967.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2256459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vadim Gouida\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>If you own property in Edmonton, chances are that property taxes are already at the front of your mind. Edmonton city council approved a 6.9 per cent property tax increase for 2026. And while you\u2019ve already received your property assessment for the year, you can expect to see tax notices mailed out in late May, with taxes due June 30.<\/p>\n<p>Elm Pruning Ban<br \/>\n<img alt=\"\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2256461\" style=\"color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shutterstock_2504136211.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2256461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OLGA DANA\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>To help prevent the spread of Dutch elm disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/city_government\/bylaws\/elm-tree-trimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">elm tree pruning is banned<\/a> from April 1 to Sept. 30. The ban is a province-wide regulation, as the beetles that transmit the disease are most active during this time and can be attracted to the fresh scent of trees.<\/p>\n<p>The contagious fungal infection was first detected in Edmonton in August 2024, and since then, seven trees have tested positive.<\/p>\n<p>Transit and Roadwork<br \/>\n<img alt=\"\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2256463\" style=\"color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/shutterstock_2285062247-5.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2256463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Habanero Pixel\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Starting March 29, Route 922 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/ets\/general-service-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will be rerouted<\/a> to go clockwise through the community of Rosenthal and will no longer travel on side streets in an effort to serve more corners of the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p>And lastly, annual spring street sweeping will begin in April. Watch for signs in your neighbourhood to see when cleaning is scheduled. A parking ban will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the week crews are active in each area.
