(Photo by Jorge Antunes)<\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/author\/jorge-maria-antunes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t Jorge Antunes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Nunavut organization researching whether online shopping can reduce food prices in the North is one of nine Indigenous-led projects with new federal money for their research.<\/p>\n<p>Northern and Arctic Affairs Minister Rebecca Chartrand announced $2.2 million for these projects, which all focus on food security, Thursday during a news conference in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>The money comes from Nutrition North Canada\u2019s food security research funding, a pot of money the government originally rolled out in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe food security research grants are looking to strengthen local food systems to help families manage the rising cost that we\u2019re seeing,\u201d Chartrand said.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the projects are based in Nunavut or conducting research there.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Niksik organization is studying whether online food purchases can make food more affordable for Inuit communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Foxe Basin Kivalliq North Sapujiyiit Guardians of the Sea Society is examining how Inuit families in Chesterfield Inlet and Coral Harbour access store\u2011bought and country food and determining where gaps may exist.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260327-legal-services\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/260327.100.94.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chartrand made the announcement at the end of the first day of the Food Sovereignty Summit, a two-day conference in Ottawa hosted by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Northern leaders were there to discuss how to reform the Nutrition North program and to bring their concerns about food insecurity directly to federal leaders. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve heard today at our summit is \u2026 some children are only eating once a day and it also impacts elders in the community and the overall strength of communities,\u201d Chartrand said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Health\u00a0\u00a0Mar 27, 2026 \u2013 4:39 pm EDT Nine organizations share $2.2M to study food security Rebecca Chartrand, minister&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":565981,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[194295],"tags":[49,48,20739],"class_list":["post-565980","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ottawa","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-ottawa"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/565980","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=565980"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/565980\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/565981"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=565980"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=565980"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=565980"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
