ATLANTA \u2014 The Braves homered three times to back six strong innings by Chris Sale, leading Atlanta to a 6-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on opening night Friday.<\/p>\n
Coming off an injury-plagued season that ended their streak of seven straight playoff appearances and already plagued by an ailing starting rotation, Sale (1-0) provided just what the Braves needed. He allowed three hits and three walks with six strikeouts before giving way to the bullpen.<\/p>\n
Ozzie Albies\u00a0homered in the first, reigning NL rookie of the year\u00a0Drake Baldwin\u00a0went deep in the third, and Michael Harris II added\u00a0a two-run shot\u00a0off Royals starter Cole Ragans (0-1) in the fourth. The left-hander was lifted after that inning, having surrendered six hits with four walks.<\/p>\n
Braves newcomer Mauricio Dub\u00f3n finished off the scoring, driving in two runs with\u00a0a double to the gap\u00a0in right-center against Bailey Falter in the seventh.<\/p>\n
There are plenty of doubts about the Braves’ rotation after Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep went down in spring training, before Spencer Strider joined them on the injured list late in camp. For one night at least, Sale showed that the top of the starting staff is in good hands.<\/p>\n
The bullpen looks much stronger, with former San Diego closer Robert Su\u00e1rez working a scoreless eighth in his new role as the Braves set-up man for Raisel Iglesias.<\/p>\n
SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 Aaron Judge\u00a0hit a two-run homer\u00a0in the sixth to end an 0-for-7 start to his year after the two-time reigning AL MVP had a strike call overturned by the automated system earlier in the same at-bat when he challenged, and New York beat San Francisco.<\/p>\n
After going hitless on opening day for the first time in the Yankees\u2019 shutout win two days earlier, Judge connected on a 405-foot drive to left with an exit velocity of 109.1 mph that broke up a scoreless game and marked his fourth career home run off Robbie Ray (0-1).<\/p>\n
The ball bounced off a staircase just inside the foul pole.<\/p>\n
It was the seventh pitch he saw from Ray, and fifth after the slugger challenged a strike call \u2014 an 86.1 m.p.h. slider \u2014 from plate umpire Chad Fairchild and had it overturned to a ball by the so-called robot umpire.<\/p>\n
The Giants, who had just one hit, are the first team to be shut out with five or fewer combined hits over the first two games of a season.<\/p>\n
MIAMI \u2014 Javier Sanoja had three hits, Sandy Alcantara allowed one run over seven innings and Miami opened the season with a win over Colorado.<\/p>\n
Alcantara (1-0) made his franchise-leading sixth start on opening day and struck out five, allowed four hits and walked two. It was a promising beginning to the season for the 2022 NL Cy Young award winner after a rollercoaster 2025 during which he went 11-13 with a 5.36 ERA while facing trade rumours.<\/p>\n
Sanoja went 3-for-3 with a run-scoring single in the second.<\/p>\n
The Marlins improved to 14-20 on opening day, while the Rockies fell to 17-17.<\/p>\n
Alcantara allowed just one baserunner until the fourth inning, when Jake McCarthy hit a leadoff bunt single and stole second before being thrown out at home by right fielder Austin Slater on Hunter Goodman\u2019s single. Jordan Beck hit an RBI single later in the inning.<\/p>\n
Miami opened the scoring in the second when designated hitter Owen Caissie hit a run-scoring double in his first at-bat with the Marlins, allowing Xavier Edwards to score from first. Caissie was a late addition to Friday\u2019s lineup after first baseman Chris Morel was scratched because of a strained oblique.<\/p>\n
TORONTO \u2014 Andr\u00e9s Gim\u00e9nez drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the ninth inning and Toronto beat the Athletics.<\/p>\n
Gim\u00e9nez had three RBIs, including a two-run triple in the fifth.<\/p>\n
Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers hit two home runs, including a game-tying blast off Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman (1-0) in the top of the ninth, but Toronto used three straight hits off Justin Sterner (0-1) to win it in the bottom half.<\/p>\n
Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto singled, went to third on Ernie Clement\u2019s high-bouncing double over third base, and scored when Gim\u00e9nez grounded a base hit up the middle.<\/p>\n
Making his major league debut after\u00a0signing with the Blue Jays in January, Okamoto finished 2 for 3. He struck out swinging in his first at-bat, walked and scored Toronto\u2019s first run of the season in a two-run fifth, then lined his first hit in the seventh.<\/p>\n
Hoffman\u00a0blew the save in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 2025 World Series\u00a0when he gave up a game-tying homer to Miguel Rojas.<\/p>\n
Friday\u2019s tying homer came one batter after Toronto successfully challenged umpire Marvin Hudson\u2019s two-strike call on Nick Kurtz to begin the ninth, with Kurtz called out on strikes.<\/p>\n
HOUSTON \u2014 Mike Trout, Josh Lowe and Zach Neto hit home runs and Los Angeles beat Houston.<\/p>\n
In his second game with the Angels, Lowe broke a 1-1 tie in the second when he sent a first-pitch fastball from Mike Burrows into the Crawford Boxes for a three-run homer. Lowe was acquired by the Angels in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays on Jan. 16.<\/p>\n
Trout\u2019s fifth-inning solo home run was part of a three-hit game, and it marks the first time in his 16-year major league career that he\u2019s gone deep in his first two games of a season.<\/p>\n
Neto added a solo shot leading off the ninth inning for his second extra-base hit of the night.<\/p>\n
The long balls were in support of an Angels staff led by Yusei Kikuchi, who allowed two runs on eight hits over 4 1\/3 innings. The bullpen quartet of Chase Silseth, Ryan Zeferjahn (1-0), Sam Bachman and Jordan Romano combined for 4 2\/3 scoreless innings.<\/p>\n
Burrows (0-1), who was making his Astros debut after he was traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Dec. 19, surrendered five runs on nine hits over 5 2\/3 innings. He struck out six.<\/p>\n
Yordan Alvarez hit a home run for the Astros, while Carlos Correa went 2 for 3 with a walk.<\/p>\n
SEATTLE \u2014 Luke Raley hit his second home run in as many games as Seattle beat Cleveland for its first win of the season.<\/p>\n
Raley, who hit only four home runs last season in an injury-plagued year, walloped a belt-high cutter from Guardians reliever Colin Holderman and hit it 390 feet to plate a pair and give the reigning AL west champions a 5-1 lead.<\/p>\n
Seattle jumped out in front in the fourth inning when Cole Young hit a three-run shot to right field off Guardians starter Gavin Williams (0-1). The second-year second baseman cranked a fastball from Williams that ran over the heart of the plate and deposited it into the bleachers in right-center field.<\/p>\n
The Guardians, who won Thursday\u2019s game 6-4 thanks in large part to a pair of home runs by rookie Chase DeLauter, benefited from another home run by the top prospect on Friday.<\/p>\n
In the first inning, DeLauter launched a 1-0 slider by Seattle starter George Kirby (1-0) and hit it 360 feet to right field. He is the third player since at least 1900 with three home runs in his first two career regular-season games, joining Trevor Story (2016) and Joe Cunningham (1954).<\/p>\n
That was all the offence Cleveland could muster against Kirby, who only allowed one more hit over his six innings of work.<\/p>\n
SAN DIEGO \u2014 Rookie Kevin McGonigle hit a tiebreaking, two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning to continue his dazzling start and lead Detroit to a win against San Diego.<\/p>\n
Kenley Jansen struck out the side in the ninth on 11 pitches in his Tigers debut for his 477th career save, which leads all active pitchers and is fourth all-time.<\/p>\n
The 21-year-old McGonigle, who was robbed of his first home run by center fielder Jackson Merrill in the second, worked a 10-pitch at-bat against Wandy Peralta in a lefty-on-lefty matchup that culminated with a single to right field that brought in Gleyber Torres and Colt Keith for a 4-2 lead.<\/p>\n
McGonigle had a brilliant debut on Thursday. He hit the first big league pitch he saw for a bases-loaded, two-run double, and finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in an 8-2 win. After just 46 games last season in Double-A, the multiposition infielder made Detroit\u2019s major league roster with a strong spring that allowed him to skip Triple-A entirely.<\/p>\n
Padres reliever Jeremiah Estrada (0-1) couldn\u2019t hold a 2-1 lead in the eighth. He walked the bases loaded before Kerry Carpenter scored on Riley Greene\u2019s single to shortstop. After striking out Spencer Torkelson, Estrada made way for Peralta.<\/p>\n
DODGERS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4<\/p>\n
LOS ANGELES \u2014 Kyle Tucker singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, lifting the Dodgers over Arizona after Los Angeles players received their World Series rings.<\/p>\n
Edwin Diaz earned his first save in his Dodgers debut.<\/p>\n
Tucker, who joined the team on a $240 million deal in the offseason, contributed for the second straight game. He had his first hit and first RBI in an 8-2 comeback win in the season opener.<\/p>\n
Alex Freeland, whose home run gave the Dodgers their first lead in the third, doubled off Kevin Ginkel (0-1). He moved to third on Shohei Ohtani\u2019s groundout to second and scored on Tucker\u2019s hit to right field.<\/p>\n
Diaz had fans on their feet as the former New York Mets reliever entered to Timmy Trumpet\u2019s \u201cNarcos.\u201d A trumpeter wearing a Dodgers jersey tooted away. Diaz converted 28 of 31 save chances last season before the Dodgers lured him away with a $69 million, three-year deal.<\/p>\n
Diaz erased Carlos Santana on a swinging strikeout. He walked Alek Thomas, who stole second. Jordan Lawler took a called third strike and Diaz retired Ketel Marte on a groundout to shortstop to end it.<\/p>\n
Edgardo Henriquez (1-0) got the win in relief, striking out Nolan Arenado in the eighth inning.
