So much to celebrate on four hooves has become this year\u2019s official face of Edmonton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Coming soon to a T-shirt or mug near you, <a href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/news\/local-news\/bisonsense-alberta-researchers-at-nait-and-lakeland-college-partner-for-special-bison-sensor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the bison;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;the bison&quot;}\" class=\"link \">the bison<\/a> was voted the 2026 successor to the magpie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Michael Overduin and his family business Edmonton River are tasked with fulfilling the campaign which explores different animal species each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe city council said they would like some help from the citizens to co-create images that reimagine the city and give people a reason to tell stories about it. So we\u2019ve been working with a variety of leaders and also citizens and growing every year,\u201d Overduin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cEvery year the theme changes. We ask the community what they think is an under-appreciated dimension of Edmonton\u2019s identity. The bison was suggested a year ago, so we got cracking and came up with some images with the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Past selections include the beaver in honour of the Indigenous name for Edmonton, \u201cbeaver hills house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey (bison) <a href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/news\/local-news\/bison-at-home-on-woodland-cree-first-nation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:meant so much to the First Nations;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;meant so much to the First Nations&quot;}\" class=\"link \">meant so much to the First Nations<\/a>. They were a source of food and shelter, clothing, you name it. They use the whole buffalo as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey are amazing creatures that were critical for this region and life and the livelihood of the people who lived here for thousands of years. We wanted to reawaken that part of the identity, that the history of the relationship between the bison and the people who lived here,\u201d Overduin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Edmonton River is now <a href=\"https:\/\/edmontonriver.com\/face.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:asking for people to vote;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;asking for people to vote&quot;}\" class=\"link \">asking for people to vote<\/a> for one of three images \u2014 although one technically has both last year\u2019s and this year\u2019s celebrated critters. They used to roam this region across the river, and so there\u2019d be literally millions crossing this region every year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The nearest place to enjoy buffalo in the wild is Elk Island National Park, where a herd of hundreds is lumbering like they did in the days before settlement. They grow from 20 kilograms at birth to 2,000 kilograms \u2014 about the size of a small car \u2014 and they\u2019re reproducing, with some used to populate new herds across Canada and the U.S.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\" Wildlife artist and photographer Memory Roth snaps photos of bison from at a safe distance at Elk Island National Park east of Edmonton last September. photo by Ron Richey.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/c6addc96b5fbb29b4125c498dbfb773d.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Wildlife artist and photographer Memory Roth snaps photos of bison from at a safe distance at Elk Island National Park east of Edmonton last September. photo by Ron Richey.<\/p>\n<p>Bison hangout<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s almost April, which means Elk Island will soon be open for visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the spring and the summer, the bison often move along the roads that park visitors use, so there\u2019s a good chance of seeing at least a handful of the creatures, a favourite creative subject for St. Albert photographer and artist Memory Roth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Roth recalled an August visit to Elk Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAs the sun was coming up, it was a little bit misty, the bison were in front of us, and the sun was shining like they were backlit. I got some amazing photographs of them with their breath and steam coming off of their backs. That was really special,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAnother time, all of a sudden, the whole herd came across the highway, down the hill, through the bison loop, and then through the sort path and out to the field.
