{"id":566393,"date":"2026-03-28T10:52:29","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T10:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/566393\/"},"modified":"2026-03-28T10:52:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T10:52:29","slug":"library-discussions-bring-mens-mental-health-to-the-surface","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/566393\/","title":{"rendered":"Library discussions bring men\u2019s mental health to the surface"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">SALT LAKE CITY \u2014 Therapists have said it\u2019s common for men to repress things like trauma, grief, stress and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Now, a new weekly series of discussions at the Marmalade branch of the Salt Lake City Library located at 280 W. 500 North aims to help men bring it all to the surface.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Nick Steffens organized the series.\u00a0A graduate student working through his clinical hours on the path to becoming a therapist, Steffens originally developed a passion for the topic in his teen years when he observed dynamics in his own family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">\u201cI became really interested in the difference between my grandpa\u2019s experience and my father\u2019s experience in the world,\u201d Steffens said, clinical intern, CMHC-I, with Red Willow Counseling &amp; Recovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Steffens explained his grandfather had a \u201croadmap\u201d \u2014 a myth or story that set expectations in his family about what it meant to be a successful man. Amid changing societal dynamics, he said his father struggled to navigate that change in a \u201cmeaningful and healthy way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">\u201cThere was a lot of, kind of, outward blame,\u201d Steffens said during an interview with KSL 5. \u201cThere was a lot of looking for things to describe what was going on, but there wasn\u2019t a lot of internal reflection about how he could navigate this world that was different than the one he had seen his father, my grandfather navigate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Eventually, Steffens\u2019 curiosity led him on his current professional journey and contributed to his desire to help men with their mental health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">\u201cEverybody has a man in their life who could use a little help, who could use a little support,\u201d Steffens said. \u201cThat might come up in isolation. It might come up in loneliness. It might come up through addiction, whether that be to a substance or something like video games. It might come up in just a depression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Steffens acknowledged it can take a long time for trauma and emotions to rise to the surface, noting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/articles\/200407\/rock-around-the-doc-metallica-in-therapy#:~:text=It%20took%20two%20years%20and%20more%20than,hard%20rock%20to%20save%20their%20band%20Metallica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">documented<\/a> experience of the members of the rock band, Metallica, who eventually turned to group therapy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">\u201cI believe Metallica, in a sense, are the greatest advocates for men\u2019s mental health\u2014not because they have these fancy degrees or they\u2019re writing papers or whatnot, but what they\u2019re doing is giving permission to seek help,\u201d Steffens said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Steffens said his group discussions, held every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., have already been making a difference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had group members show up that have sat in the corner the first time, said nothing, and then come up at the end and said, \u2018I haven\u2019t felt relaxed in years and I\u2019m realizing now just in listening to other men talk that this pressure and this feeling that I\u2019ve had isn\u2019t unique to me,\u2019 and that this is a shared experience, and just acknowledging that pressure that had built inside for how many years, was enough to kind of take that next step,\u201d Steffens related.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">Steffens said a good initial indication someone needs help isn\u2019t always a massive sign, and can even be when they ask, \u2018what is going on with me.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">He believed the group discussions might help others if they give them a try, possibly giving men permission to explore what\u2019s going on inside their heads.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-originalfontsize=\"12pt\" data-originalcomputedfontsize=\"16\">\u201cThere\u2019s a real power in groups because what it really does is it\u2019s showing that we share a lot of experiences,\u201d Steffens said. \u201cWe share a lot of struggles and we\u2019re not alone in this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/ksltv.com\/partnered-content\/hmm\/hope-squad-mental-health\/872118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u2018Hope Squad\u2019 empowers kids to look out for peers\u2019 mental health<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SALT LAKE CITY \u2014 Therapists have said it\u2019s common for men to repress things like trauma, grief, stress&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":566394,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[49,48,84,393,394],"class_list":["post-566393","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mental-health","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-health","tag-mental-health","tag-mentalhealth"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/566393","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=566393"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/566393\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/566394"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=566393"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=566393"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=566393"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
