Marika was reported missing to the EPS on Sept. 25, 2025, by out of province family, and police immediately began investigating. A media release seeking the public’s assistance locating Marika was issued on Oct. 8, 2025.

By the end of October, investigations led police to believe that Marika was deceased, and her disappearance was criminal in nature. As a result, EPS Homicide Section assumed the investigation on Oct. 22, 2025, and on March 17, 2026, travelled to Charlottetown, P.E.I where they arrested and charged John Angus Joseph MacArthur, 47, with second degree murder and indignity to a body. MacArthur was transported back to Edmonton on March 20 and has since been remanded.

MacArthur and Sutton were known to one another and in an intimate partner relationship. While not formally reported to police, a history of domestic violence was uncovered during the investigation. As such, Marika’s death is considered an intimate partner homicide.

Investigators continue to search for Marika’s remains and believe that McArthur may have disposed of her body somewhere along Highway 2 between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe, Alberta between Aug. 22-29, 2025. MacArthur was driving a 2014 black Jeep Patriot at the time with Alberta license plate: CFB 2578. A photo of his vehicle is included below.

MacArthur’s 2014 Jeep Patriot

2014 Jeep Patriot
AB license plate: CFB 2578

“To protect the integrity of the investigation and secure the arrest of the accused, we deliberately chose to deviate from our normal process of immediately notifying the public of Marika’s death,” says Det.
