Ross \u201cThe Boss\u201d Friedman<\/a>, legendary guitarist of both The Dictators<\/a> and Manowar<\/a>, has died at age 72 after a battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s Disease.<\/p>\n

Friedman\u2019s death was announced by the Metal Hall of Fame, which stated, in part, \u201cIt is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of legendary guitarist, our dear friend, and Metal Hall of Fame Inductee Ross \u2018The Boss\u2019 Friedman. Ross was a pioneering force in both punk and heavy metal, best known as a founding member of The Dictators and Manowar.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was less than two months ago when Friedman revealed his ALS diagnosis<\/a>, stating,\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to know what lies ahead, and it crushes me not to be able to play guitar, but the outpouring of love has been so, so strong. I\u2019m absolutely blown away by the love and support from family, friends and fans. I love you all.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guitarist co-founded the influential New York City proto-punk band The Dictators in 1973, and remained a member until his passing. In 1980, he formed the metal band Manowar, remaining with the band until 1989.<\/p>\n

He had also played with Manitoba\u2019s Wild Kingdom featuring fellow Dictators Andy Shernoff and Handsome Dick Manitoba; the French rock band Shakin\u2019 Street; the band Heyday; and other acts. Additionally, he toured with his own eponymous group the Ross The Boss Band.<\/p>\n

It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of legendary guitarist, our dear friend, Metal Hall of Fame Inductee, and Global Metal Ambassador Ross \u201cThe Boss\u201d Friedman.<\/p>\n

Ross was a pioneering force in both punk and heavy metal, best known as a founding member of The Dictators and Manowar. His powerful playing, unmistakable tone, and uncompromising spirit helped shape generations of musicians and fans around the world.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Ross publicly shared his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), facing it with the same courage and honesty that defined his life and career.<\/p>\n

Ross\u2019s impact on music is immeasurable. From the raw energy of early punk to the epic scale of heavy metal, his work left a lasting mark on the genre and on everyone who experienced it.<\/p>\n

Beyond his achievements on stage and in the studio, Ross was deeply respected by his peers and beloved by fans across continents. His legacy will live on through his music, his influence, and the countless lives he touched.<\/p>\n
