Canada\u2019s oldest Black WWII veteran dies at 104<\/p>\n

Armstrong\u2019s oldest veteran, and Canada\u2019s oldest Black Second World War veteran, has passed away at the age of 104.<\/p>\n
Alvie Burden passed on Thursday, March 26, marking the end of a \u201cremarkable century-long arc,\u201d according to the Facebook group Black Canadian Veterans Stories.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe imprint he leaves\u2014service, longevity, and a life lived with quiet purpose\u2014continues to guide those who speak his name,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n
The Armstrong Legion offered words of condolences on Facebook Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of Alvie Burden, Armstrong Legions oldest Veteran. Sincere condolences to his family,\u201d the Legion said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlvie Burden\u2019s long life glowed with a rare steadiness, the kind that comes from more than a century of witnessing change and choosing integrity at every turn,\u201d the Black Canadian Veterans group said.<\/p>\n
Born in Tisdale, Sask. on Jan. 30, 1922, Burden carried the quiet resilience of the Prairies into every chapter that followed.<\/p>\n
At 104, he held the distinction of being Canada\u2019s oldest Black Second World War veteran, a living link to a generation. His courage helped shape the country\u2019s identity, the group said.<\/p>\n
Enlisting at 19, Burden was posted to the Saskatoon Light Infantry Regiment, according to Valour Canada. The only Black man in his company, Burden served more than 21 months between the Italian and Dutch campaigns in the war.<\/p>\n
He was injured in Italy when an enemy tank shell landed behind him and the shrapnel pierced his head and wrists. Fortunately, he recovered from the incident quickly, and went on to become a centenarian.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis service during the war became only one part of a much larger legacy. In Armstrong, British Columbia, where he spent his later years, Alvie became a gentle keeper of memory,\u201d the Black Canadian Veterans group said.<\/p>\n
The group added that Burden\u2019s stories offered warmth, humility and humour, and helped younger generations understand the realities of the war, as well as what endurance and hope look like in a human life.<\/p>\n
