Walton Goggins’ Shane Vendrell plays a key role in “The Shield,” but that almost wasn’t the case. Despite being an important part of the first episode’s most shocking moment, FX’s executives seemingly viewed Vendrell as expendable, as they wanted to fire Goggins from the acclaimed crime drama<\/a>\u00a0after the pilot aired.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, Goggins revealed that he wasn’t heavily desired in television at the time, mainly because he didn’t fit what networks were looking for. However, he had no idea that FX’s bigwigs wanted him fired until much later. “Shawn [Ryan] didn’t tell me until the end of Season 1 during a DVD commentary recording, and I said, ‘How?! I had two lines!’ He said to them, ‘I know what this guy’s capable of, let me prove it,’ and he focused the second episode on Shane. I’m glad he didn’t tell me because I may have f***ed that up.”<\/p>\n

FX had reservations about “The Shield” early on. The\u00a0cop show likely wouldn’t exist without the success of the Denzel Washington-starring “Training Day,”<\/a> which helped ease concerns about centering a series on corrupt law enforcement officers. Elsewhere,\u00a0Michael Chiklis almost missed out on playing Vic Mackey because of his work on another show<\/a>. Goggins clearly wasn’t the only concern for FX’s executives, but Ryan’s efforts ultimately convinced them to keep him on board.<\/p>\n

The second episode of “The Shield” puts a strong focus on Goggins’ character. The storyline chronicles the aftermath of the pilot, which sees Vic Mackey, Shane Vendrell, and the rest of their corrupt task force violently \u2014 and definitively \u2014 deal with a mole in their ranks. Shane is wracked with guilt and anxiety following the incident, and Goggins’ performance proves why he deserved to stick around.<\/p>\n

“Shawn Ryan, the creator of the show, said, ‘I just saw this kid in ‘The Apostle,’ let me write an episode for him.’ And so episode number two was really kind of about my character. And [then] the brass saw it and were like, ‘He’s our guy,’ Goggins recalled in a conversation with\u00a0Business Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The rest is history. Goggins remained part of “The Shield,” and has since gone on to star in hit shows like “Justified,” “Fallout,” and Season 3 of “The White Lotus” \u2014 a career trajectory that followed his breakout on the series.<\/p>\n
