{"id":567869,"date":"2026-03-29T03:41:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-29T03:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/567869\/"},"modified":"2026-03-29T03:41:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T03:41:21","slug":"250-room-floating-hotel-proposed-for-vancouvers-coal-harbour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/567869\/","title":{"rendered":"250-room floating hotel proposed for Vancouver&#8217;s Coal Harbour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Could a floating hotel take over part of Vancouver\u2019s waterfront in Coal Harbour?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the proposal being put forth by Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre (VHFC) on behalf of the Sunborn Group, which is hoping to build a 250-room floating hotel in a water lot dock system just off of 1055 Canada Place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"955\" height=\"598\" data-id=\"4411863\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Floating-hotel-proposal-Coal-Harbour-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4411863\"  \/>A floating 250-room hotel is being proposed for Vancouver\u2019s Coal Harbour area. (VHFC Image, Handout)<\/p>\n<p>VHFC says this is a unique proposal due to its location on the water, which the City of Vancouver says would require a rezoning in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes the form of a floating vessel,\u201d VHFC said in its rezoning application. \u201cSunborn Vancouver hotel will be built offsite, eliminating any construction impact and significantly speeding up delivery times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith plans to directly connect to the Vancouver Convention Centre\u2019s existing infrastructure, the new floating hotel will operate like a normal building on land, with no discharge to the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The application says the hotel will use no fossil fuels of any kind, using renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel would include a restaurant, bar, cafe, and spa, and would employ as many as 225 full-time workers, it says.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Destination Vancouver released a report that said the city needs to build 10,000 hotel rooms by 2050 to keep up with increasing demand.<\/p>\n<p>VHFC says the floating hotel would help address this shortage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"858\" height=\"511\" data-id=\"4411865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Floating-hotel-proposal-Coal-Harbour-location.png\" alt=\"A floating 250-room hotel is being proposed for Vancouver's Coal Harbour area.\" class=\"wp-image-4411865\"  \/>A floating 250-room hotel is being proposed for Vancouver\u2019s Coal Harbour area. (VHFC Image, Handout)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed Sunborn vessel would provide much-needed hotel rooms at a faster-than-typical pace, given that vessel construction would not require a building or redevelopment permit and could begin off-site following rezoning,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>The company says the hotel could be in operation as soon as 2027, pending approvals.<\/p>\n<p>City staff says the company\u2019s proposal is consistent with the Vancouver Official Development Plan, but is recommending that the rezoning application and plans be referred to a public hearing due to the \u201cunusual nature of this floating structure in the marine environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Council is set to discuss the proposal at its next meeting on March 31.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Could a floating hotel take over part of Vancouver\u2019s waterfront in Coal Harbour?
