Actor John Abraham recently shared his thoughts on censorship and the challenges it poses to filmmakers. In an exclusive interview with India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai, the 52-year-old addressed the hurdles faced in getting his film, ‘Tehran’, approved for public screening<\/a>, highlighting the complexities filmmakers encounter in navigating political sensitivities while staying true to their creative vision.<\/p>\n

While speaking to Sardesai, Abraham expressed gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs for allowing ‘Tehran’ to be shown, stating, “I don’t think this film (Tehran) would have passed to be shown in theatres, to be very honest. I’m grateful to the Ministry of External Live.” His comments highlight the bureaucratic processes that can influence a film’s distribution.<\/p>\n

When the consulting editor asked whether he would prefer no censor board at all or minimal censorship, the actor emphasised its necessity, but questioned its current implementation. He noted, “I think you need censorship, but the way it’s being overseen, you know, could be a big question mark, suggesting a balance between creative expression and regulatory oversight.<\/p>\n

He added, “Till now, they\u2019ve been good and kind with us, and I\u2019ve been responsible with the way I\u2019ve made and spoken in my films. For the record, I\u2019m not right-wing, I\u2019m not left-wing – I\u2019m apolitical, but politically aware. And it\u2019s important for me to make an honest statement.”<\/p>\n

Further addressing the trend of politically charged films, Abraham remarked, “What worries me is when right-wing films find a huge audience. That’s when you ask yourself, as a filmmaker, what line am I going to tow – Am I going to take the commercial route to make more money, or stay true to what I want to say? I\u2019ve chosen the latter. In ‘Tehran’, this is not a patriotic film, it\u2019s set in 2012 – but it shows India as it was. My trailer even says it: \u2018India has deserted me.\u2019”<\/p>\n

When asked whether ‘The Diplomat’ actor<\/a> would ever take the commercial route with a right-wing-themed film, he replied, “When films are made with the intent to sway people in a hyper-political atmosphere – and they find an audience – that\u2019s scary.”<\/p>\n

He continued, “I\u2019ve never been tempted, and I\u2019m never going to make those kinds of films. Just like I can\u2019t make adult comedies, it\u2019s difficult for me to produce or act in them. It\u2019s a choice.”<\/p>\n

Reflecting on interactions with the censor board, John Abraham acknowledged, “We’ve been pulled up a number of times, but there are people in the censor board who do listen. It’s important to find the right voice and the right audience there to get your point across, and I believe that if they see sense in what you’re doing, you’ll get through.”<\/p>\n

Finally, Abraham concluded by recognising the risks involved in his work. “I know what I’m getting into with my eyes open. Even with ‘Tehran’, I was fully aware of the risks. In management, there’s a saying: the higher the risk, the greater the profit. He believes that taking risks is essential for having a voice and making impactful statements through cinema.<\/p>\n
