Vegas fired head coach Bruce Cassidy on Sunday and named John Tortorella his replacement.<\/p>\n
Cassidy, 60, has served as the Golden Knights’ head coach since 2022-23, when he guided the organization to a Stanley Cup title.<\/p>\n
But with Vegas underperforming expectations in 2025-26, it decided to move on for the run to the playoffs.<\/p>\n
With his team sitting third in the Pacific Division with a 32-26-16 record, Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon announced the news through a team release.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe thank Bruce Cassidy for his dedication to our hockey club and community over the past four seasons,\u201d said McCrimmon. \u201cUnder Bruce\u2019s leadership, we reached our ultimate goal in 2023 by bringing a Stanley Cup to Vegas. Bruce will forever be remembered with the utmost regard by our organization for what was accomplished here. <\/p>\n
“With the stretch run of the 2025-26 regular season upon us, we believe that a change is necessary for us to return to the level of play that is expected of our club. With John Tortorella, we bring in a Stanley Cup champion as well as one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NHL. His guidance will be a great asset to our team at the pivotal point in the season we currently face. We look forward to welcoming John to Vegas.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cassidy ends his Golden Knights tenure with a 178-99-43 record, and never missed the post-season.<\/p>\n
He had previously spent six seasons as head coach with the Boston Bruins and parts of two seasons with the Washington Capitals.<\/p>\n
Tortorella, meanwhile, will rejoin the NHL’s coaching ranks after being fired by the Philadelphia Flyers towards the end of the 2024-25 season.<\/p>\n
Prior to his three-season stint in Philadelphia, Tortorella had previously coached with Tampa Bay, the New York Rangers, Vancouver and Columbus.<\/p>\n
The 67-year-old won the Stanley Cup with the Lighting in 2003-04, and was named the NHL’s top coach as the Jack Adams winner in that season with Tampa Bay and in 2016-17 with the Blue Jackets.<\/p>\n
Tortorella has coached in 1,620 NHL games, which ranks sixth all-time, and his 770 wins rank ninth.<\/p>\n
The Boston native served as an assistant coach with Team USA for its gold-medal win at February’s Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n
