with snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 centimetres forecast into Monday.

A special weather statement issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada warns that poor travel conditions are expected overnight and through Monday morning.

Bands of heavy snowfall are expected on Sunday night, with impacted locations likely to include the Highway 1 and Highway 2 corridors near Calgary and west of the city, it said.

Snowfall will become more widespread later in the evening, which will bring an additional five to 10 cm to the foothills and central Alberta area by Monday afternoon.

ECCC meteorologist Erin Staunton said it is still difficult to say where the heaviest snowfall will occur.

“It could potentially impact Calgary or surrounding areas, but it is going to be very, very localized,” Staunton said. “Some areas might see kind of little to no snow, but other areas might see some very quick accumulations of heavy snow.”

The special weather statement aims to inform Calgarians of the potential for localized accumulations of heavy snow, poor travel conditions and poor visibility.

Although it remains to be seen, Staunton said snow will vary from place to place, and even potentially within Calgary.

“Areas that do end up under those heavy snow bands could see potentially 15 to 25 centimeters if those heavy bands do linger in one area for any length of time,” she said.

The snow is expected to end toward Monday afternoon, with temperatures expected to be above low single-digits.

In the meantime, ECCC advises anyone commuting on Monday morning to allow themselves some extra travel time.

“Be sure to drive according to conditions, and also do be aware that conditions could change quite quickly over a short distance,” Staunton said.

City crews will monitor forecasts and will apply anti-icing materials on Calgary roads if needed, said Mayor Jeromy Farkas in a post on X.

“During snowfall, crews focus on plowing and applying material to major roads like Crowchild Trail, Glenmore Trail, Macleod Trail and Memorial Drive,” Farkas said. “Crews will also monitor trouble spots like bridges, hills and important intersections across Calgary.”

Calgary is in line for another early
