Dozens of people looking for seashells found something much bigger, and perhaps “greater,” off of Florida’s coast.<\/p>\n
Around 49 guests with Hubbard’s Marina in Madeira Beach went on a shelling excursion at around 11:15 a.m. Friday when they found a roughly 10-foot Great White shark 25-75 yards from the shoreline of Shell Key.<\/p>\n
The shark was seen in the area for following large schools of tarpon fish as it was “displaying a calm but curious demeanor.”<\/p>\n

“Seeing a shark of this size and grace so close to the island is a ‘stop-everything’ moment for our guests,” Captain Dylan Hubbard, Owner of Hubbard\u2019s Marina, said in a statement. “We see incredible wildlife every day\u2014from pods of dolphins to sea turtles\u2014but to see an apex predator following the tarpon run is a powerful reminder of how healthy and diverse our local ecosystem is right now.”<\/p>\n
The shark remained in the area for about 15 minutes before heading south.<\/p>\n
Hubbard’s Marina says it will use footage it captured of the shark to help researchers and the public better understand the movements of these animals in coastal waters.<\/p>\n
