Among those affected was Mike Prinke, a technical writer, whose situation gained traction after his wife, Jenni Griffin, shared a Facebook post detailing the family\u2019s circumstances. Griffin said her husband is undergoing treatment for terminal brain cancer and that the layoff resulted in the loss of his life insurance coverage.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat makes this different for our family is that Mike is currently fighting terminal brain cancer,\u201d she wrote, adding, \u201cBecause of the layoff, we didn’t just lose income\u2014we lost his life insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Griffin said securing a new policy was not possible as his condition is now classified as a pre-existing condition. She described the financial and emotional strain, including concerns about funeral expenses, housing, and supporting their son.<\/p>\n

Company responds after backlash<\/p>\n
Following reactions online, Epic Games Chief Executive Officer Tim Sweeney responded on X, stating that the company is in touch with the family and working to address the issue.<\/p>\n
Epic is in contact with the family and will solve the insurance for them. There is high confidentiality around medical information and it was not a factor in this layoff decision. Sorry to everyone for not recognizing this terribly painful situation and handling it in advance.<\/p>\n
