Last week, the maker of Fortnite confirmed it would lay off around 1,000 employees as part of efforts to manage financial pressure.

Among those affected was Mike Prinke, a technical writer, whose situation gained traction after his wife, Jenni Griffin, shared a Facebook post detailing the family’s circumstances. Griffin said her husband is undergoing treatment for terminal brain cancer and that the layoff resulted in the loss of his life insurance coverage.

“What makes this different for our family is that Mike is currently fighting terminal brain cancer,” she wrote, adding, “Because of the layoff, we didn’t just lose income—we lost his life insurance.”

Griffin said securing a new policy was not possible as his condition is now classified as a pre-existing condition. She described the financial and emotional strain, including concerns about funeral expenses, housing, and supporting their son.

“So now, as I face the reality of losing my husband… I’m also facing the reality of what type of funeral/burial I can afford,” she wrote, while urging readers to help her message reach decision-makers at the company.

Company responds after backlash

Following reactions online, Epic Games Chief Executive Officer Tim Sweeney responded on X, stating that the company is in touch with the family and working to address the issue.

Epic is in contact with the family and will solve the insurance for them. There is high confidentiality around medical information and it was not a factor in this layoff decision. Sorry to everyone for not recognizing this terribly painful situation and handling it in advance.

— Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) March 29, 2026

“Epic is in contact with the family and will solve the insurance for them,” Sweeney said. He added that medical information remains confidential and “was not a factor in this layoff decision,” while also apologising for not addressing the situation earlier.

Layoffs part of broader cost-cutting

Epic Games is reducing nearly 20 per cent of its workforce as part of a broader restructuring effort. The company said affected employees would receive severance packages, including at least four months of base pay and extended healthcare coverage.

The layoffs impacted multiple roles across the company, including writers, engineers and marketing personnel. Employees have also created an online list of affected workers to help them find new opportunities.

First Published on March 31, 2026, 00:01:01 IST

The recent round of layoffs at Epic Games has sparked widespread attention after a personal case highlighted the…

[6
49,48,61
0":"post-570853","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-technology","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-technology
["GET
