Hockey League road tilts, facing Surrey on Friday, March 20 and Chilliwack on Saturday, March 21 with dramatically different results.

Bulldogs blowout

On March 20 in Surrey, it wasn’t a close match as the Bulldogs came onto the ice with full force against the Eagles.

It was Kai Matthew’s first game back after an injury and he kicked off scoring 35 seconds into the game. It would become the first in what would be a hat trick. That first goal was assisted by Brandon Gill and Teague McAllister.

Just a few minutes later, McAllister got a goal of his own assisted by Matthew and Eduard Mishikov.

The first period closed out with Matthew’s second goal of the night, assisted by Grady Magner. That gave Alberni a 3-0 lead going into the second period.

The one-sided match continued into the next period.

Both goals in the second period were scored on a Bulldogs power play following a major penalty from a Surrey player. Within 30 seconds both Jackson Lackas and Wyatt Blace found the back of Surrey’s net.

Lackas was assisted by Wyatt Davis and Grady Magner while Blace was assisted by Eric Lund and Ryan George. Going into the third, the Bulldogs were up 5-0.

Just 38 seconds into the final period, Matthew duplicated his goal in the first period to complete the hat trick. Once again he was assisted by Brandon Gill and Teague McAllister.

Alberni didn’t let up with Alex Payie scoring the team’s seventh goal of the night, assisted by Samuel Leonard.

To close the night out, Roy Chung scored the Bulldog’s eighth goal of the game. He was assisted by Jackson Lackas and Kye Benoche.

Alberni shut Surrey down with an 8-0 victory. Goalie Derik Brouillard kept the Bulldogs’ net safe from all 26 shots from Surrey.

Shut down by Chilliwack

Whatever momentum the Bulldogs had heading out of their massive win against Surrey was swiftly put to a stop by the Chilliwack Chiefs on March 21.

The Chiefs scored the first two goals of the night but Alberni was able to respond with two of their own. Kye Benoche got the team on the scoreboard with a goal assisted by Brendan DeFeo and Jackson Lackas. Wyatt Blace tied it up 2-2, his goal assisted by Samuel Leonard and Eric Lund.

Chilliwack took their lead back with just one second left on the clock for the first period, going into intermission up 3-2.

Very early in the second period the Bulldogs’ Ryan George was handed a hooking penalty, Chilliwack leveraged their extra man to grow their lead to 4-2 over Alberni. That grew to 5-2 after another Chilliwack goal, this one at even strength, a few minutes later.

Wyatt Davis attempted to help the Bulldogs bounce back, scoring the team’s third goal of the game. He was assisted by Jackson Lackas.

Leaving the second period it was 5-3 for Chilliwack. Alberni was unable to bounce back and Chilliwack scored yet another goal in the third period, giving them a 6-3 victory.

ICE CHIPS…Find coverage of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ final regular season home games and playoff outlook online at www.albernivalleynews.com and in the April 7 print edition.

BCHL: Alberni Valley Bulldogs split late-season weekend on the Mainland Published 5:30 am Monday, March 30, 2026 The…

[194299
49,48,87674
post-571056","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-surrey","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-surrey
["GET
