Courtney Stodden revealed they were diagnosed with Tourette\u2019s syndrome. <\/p>\n
The model publicly shared their diagnosis on Sunday, posting an Instagram clip<\/a> from their infamous 2011 interview<\/a> with ABC News\u2019 Lara Spencer, which took place after Stodden got married to 51-year-old Doug Hutchinson<\/a>\u00a0at age 16.<\/p>\n \u201cThey made a moment into a joke\u2026 but there was a reason,\u201d Stodden, who\u00a0is non-binary<\/a>\u00a0and uses they\/them pronouns, began their lengthy caption.<\/p>\n Courtney Stodden (seen above with Doug Hutchinson in their 2011 interview with ABC News) revealed that they have Tourette\u2019s syndrome. ABC<\/p>\n They continued, \u201cThere\u2019s a part of my story no one ever understood. As an adult \u2014 i was diagnosed with having suffered from Tourette syndrome\u2026 and for most of my childhood i lived with tics i couldn\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n Stodden, 31, explained that their tics included stuttering, eye squinting, mouth movements and muscle tension, as well as seizures when they were younger.<\/p>\n \u201cI never talked about it before\u2026 because i was ashamed,\u201d the reality star wrote. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to out myself. I thought it would make me look weird like something was \u2018wrong\u2019 with me. Getty Images<\/p>\n Stodden, pictured above in a selfie, denied they were drunk or on drugs during the 2011 interview. courtneyastodden\/Instagram<\/p>\n Stodden elaborated that when their \u201ctics and muscle spasms happened,\u201d they tried to make it look \u201cintentional\u201d and \u201csexy\u201d to cover up what they were really going through. <\/p>\n But when Stodden did their viral 2011 interview, their \u201cnerves\u201d brought the tics back to the surface. <\/p>\n \u201cThat moment people turned into a meme\u2026people thought i was on something,\u201d Stodden recalled. \u201cI wasn\u2019t. There was no alcohol. No pills. Nothing in my system.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat you were seeing\u2026 was a little girl with Tourette\u2019s under pressure, being watched, trying to hold herself together. GC Images<\/p>\n Stodden said that after hiding her Tourette\u2019s syndrome, they are no longer \u201cashamed\u201d about their diagnosis.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause there is nothing shameful about something you never had control over,\u201d they said. \u201cAnd if you\u2019ve ever been misunderstood for something your body did\u2026 you\u2019re not alone.\u201d<\/p>\n Stodden became a tabloid fixture in 2011 after tying the knot with Hutchison, now 65, at age 16 in a rushed Las Vegas ceremony. <\/p>\n Stodden infamously married 51-year-old Hutchinson (both pictured above) in 2011 at age 16.
