The WNBA’s Toronto Tempo are bringing in a longtime member of the local basketball community as an assistant coach.<\/p>\n

The Tempo have hired former Toronto Metropolitan University women’s head basketball coach Carly Clarke, the expansion team announced<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n

The Halifax native is “the first Canadian coach of Canada’s first WNBA team,” a statement from the Tempo said.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re thrilled to welcome Carly to our staff,” said Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello in a statement. “Carly is a coach players trust and respect. She brings tremendous energy, a deep understanding of the game, and a real passion for developing athletes every day. Her experience at every level of sport and her commitment to excellence make her a perfect fit for what we\u2019re building.”<\/p>\n

She served as head coach of TMU from 2012-2026, highlighted by winning a U Sports national title in 2022 as part of an undefeated season.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Clarke has been involved with the Canadian national team at multiple levels, including serving as an assistant with the senior women’s national team during the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris, respectively.<\/p>\n

Clarke joins a staff headed up by two-time WNBA championship winning coach Brondello that includes Ciara Carl, Brian Lankton, Olaf Lange and Sadie Edwards.<\/p>\n

The Tempo will begin their inaugural season on May 8 against the Washington Mystics. Their first pre-season game goes on April 28 versus the Connecticut Sun.<\/p>\n
