The RCMP is saying goodbye to Cloverdale as they wrap up operations after 75 years.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Wendy Mehat, officer in charge of the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit, wrote a letter to Cloverdale residents thanking them for their overwhelming support for the past three-quarters of a century.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter more than seven decades of service, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is preparing to say goodbye to policing in Cloverdale,\u201d Mehat wrote.<\/p>\n
She noted that while policing in the neighbourhood is entering a new era, on behalf of all past and present Mounties serving in Cloverdale, she wanted to express \u201csincere gratitude for the trust and support (Cloverdalians) have shown our members over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n
The RCMP first began policing Cloverdale in May of 1951, when eighteen Mounties left HQ in Vancouver to take up their new post.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt that time, the Detachment was led by Corporal Bill Turner, and 17 RCMP Constables,\u201d Mehat wrote. \u201cThe first RCMP members worked out of Surrey City Hall at 5900 Main Street in Cloverdale \u2013 known today as 177b Street, Surrey \u2013 laying the foundation for policing in what would become one of Surrey\u2019s most historic and vibrant communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mehat added that Mounties built lasting relationships with locals over the years and were present at many community events, including the Cloverdale Rodeo.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been an absolute privilege to police in Cloverdale and to call this community home for the past 75 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
