{"id":571902,"date":"2026-03-31T01:35:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T01:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/571902\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T01:35:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T01:35:13","slug":"canadian-food-banks-reduce-services-amid-unprecedented-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/571902\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian food banks reduce services amid \u2018unprecedented\u2019 demand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From reducing the number of visits to how much food is given out, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/food-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">food banks<\/a> across Canada are changing how they operate as demand has become \u201cunprecedented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the food bank in Moose Jaw, Sask., said visitors had increased by 150 per cent compared to four years ago, forcing the non-profit to decide to hand out goods once a month instead of its current twice-monthly pickup program.<\/p>\n<p>But service changes are happening from coast to coast to coast, with Food Banks Alberta saying it hasn\u2019t slowed down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing really across the country and certainly across the province of Alberta has been just unprecedented growth in demand and need for food support and service from food banks,\u201d said Melissa From, a board member of Food Banks Alberta.<\/p>\n<p>From, who is also president and CEO of the Calgary Food Bank, said it really started with the \u201cpivotal moment\u201d of the COVID-19 pandemic when issues of employment and income insecurity struck. After that, Canada-wide inflation raised the costs of things like mortgages, fuel and food, which spurred more requests for food.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>According to Food Banks Alberta, 132,402 people received food from a food bank in the province this month, with 36 per cent of users being children.<\/p>\n<p>From said increasing demand has meant changes, particularly to smaller communities, as they have less money and donations.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/healthiq.jpg\" alt=\"Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly health news<\/p>\n<p>Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have some food banks that are having to make the decision to give less food to more people,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have some folks who are having to figure out how to triage the clients that are coming to them and who needs support the most, and so no two food banks are facing the same situation, although many of the same challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story is the same in Ontario, with food banks across the province reporting economic uncertainties creating another \u201cchallenging year\u201d for many.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'How far will Canada\u2019s new grocery rebates go for low-income families?'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/OFFIN_PKG_WEB_thumbnail_1280x720_.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:01<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHow far will Canada\u2019s new grocery rebates go for low-income families?\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Feed Ontario reports that in 2025, food banks in the province served more than one million people who accessed its services more than 8.7 million times.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The non-profit added in the 2025 survey of its network, just 33 per cent of food banks stated at the time they were able to meet demand.
