{"id":572076,"date":"2026-03-31T03:29:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T03:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/572076\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:29:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T03:29:14","slug":"migraine-sufferers-blame-shifting-weather-for-worsening-symptoms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/572076\/","title":{"rendered":"Migraine sufferers blame shifting weather for worsening symptoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For University of Alberta student Kearyn Hall, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/migraines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">migraines<\/a> can be debilitating.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m completely incapacitated when I get a migraine,\u201d she said. \u201cYou can\u2019t really deal with that on your own. Advil and Tylenol doesn\u2019t touch it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reports having up to 20 migraines a month, some lasting a day while others can last through an entire week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get migraines with aura, so I get tunnel visions and then my vision goes totally blank,\u201d Hall explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI can\u2019t do schoolwork. I can\u2019t go to school. He says they are so much more than \u201cjust headaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nerve starts to become irritable. It spills out some really inflammatory and irritative neuropeptides that acts in the immune system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cThen the immune system basically creates hives on the lining of the brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those \u201chives\u201d are caused by inflammation in the protective lining around the brain, triggering pain and other symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s predominantly started by the nerve, and the nerve just becomes irritable through all these different trigger mechanisms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors caution weather is often one trigger among many, not the sole cause. Things like hormone changes, a lack of food and hydration and stress can all have a major impact on symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we are seeing more patients,\u201d Dr.\u00a0 Bector said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI think we are seeing more severity because of the change in pressure and weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He calls it a \u201chypersensitivity syndrome,\u201d where every kind of stimulus in your body is ramped up. That includes things like sensitivities to pain, sound, light and smell.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms can include severe, throbbing pain, nausea and vomiting, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, changes in vision, mood changes and fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>While migraines are one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, they are often dismissed as stress or \u2018just a headache\u2019 \u2014 a misconception doctors say leads many sufferers to delay treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/healthiq.jpg\" alt=\"Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly health news<\/p>\n<p>Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is one of the biggest causes of absenteeism from work,\u201d Bector said. \u201cNot showing up for events, not being able to do housework, not showing up with family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you notice your headaches happen more than once a week, last longer than 24 hours, come with new or worsening symptoms or are interfering with your ability to work attend school or take part in social activities, you may want to consult a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a disease they have to put up with,\u201d Bector added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cYou just need the right treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lifestyle changes and medications can help, and doctors hope by spreading awareness, more people will understand that there are options out there.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Neurologist explains chronic migraine triggers and treatment options'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/MN_Regional_Migraine_Awareness_June_12_PIC.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t4:17<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNeurologist explains chronic migraine triggers and treatment options\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Bector said over the last few years, medication and research have come a long way.<\/p>\n<p>He encourages people to keep a diary of what may trigger their headaches, and when they come on to better treat the symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>He said carrying an emergency medication kit for when it strikes is also important, adding people often underestimate how big of an impact it\u2019s having on their life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people with migraine tend to not really seek care, they just try to sleep it off, take some medication, especially over the counter stuff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cDon\u2019t underplay how bad these headaches are in terms of impact in your life \u201c<\/p>\n<p>There are also several apps, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/migrainebuddy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Migraine Buddy<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/migrainecanada.org\/tools\/tracker-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Migraine Tracker App<\/a> that can help patients catch triggers and monitor weather.<\/p>\n<p>Research released in 2025 also recommended occipital <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11564773\/nerve-blockers-migraines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">nerve blocks be offered in emergency rooms to treat acute migraine attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The use of intravenous Prochlorperazine, which blocks dopamine receptors in the brain, is recommended but is not readily available. She\u2019s pushed through and will be achieving her undergraduate degree but says it has been difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s trying a Botox treatment for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>A major\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cep.sagepub.com\/content\/30\/7\/804.abstract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clinical trial\u00a0<\/a>published in 2010 found <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/2623498\/not-just-for-wrinkles-how-botox-is-helping-ease-migraine-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">chronic migraine patients treated with Botox<\/a> experienced fewer headaches with little to no side effects.<\/p>\n<p>Patients are treated every few months with a series of injections to the forehead, temples, the back of the head, the back of the neck and the back of the shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>While it can take weeks to kick in, Hall is hopeful it can help her long-term deal with the symptoms she\u2019s had for more than six years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just hoping that we\u2019ll make them a little bit more manageable so I can actually attend my classes and get my master\u2019s degree,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Treatments like Botox aren\u2019t an option for everyone \u2014 they often require specialist referrals and insurance approvals. In some cases, patients end up paying out of pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Botox for migraines?'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:27<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBotox for migraines?\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11735273\/migraine-sufferers-southern-alberta-affordable-treatments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cost can be prohibitive for many<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Madison Young specializes in the treatment of migraines through her practice at My Migraine Clinic in Calgary \u2014 known as the migraine capital of Canada due to the drastic weather changes from Chinook winds.<\/p>\n<p>From her experience, Young\u00a0 said migraines disproportionately affect people in their 30s, 40s and 50s and women more than men.<\/p>\n<p>Her treatment of patients involves everything from \u201clifestyle education\u201d to their dietary habits, exercise and sleep, along with \u201cfull service migraine management of all pharmaceutical medications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young said there is limited support for the medications she can prescribe that are covered by the government.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Calgary migraine patient raises concerns about treatment access in Alberta'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ONLINE_STILL_MIGRAINE_MONEY.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:54<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCalgary migraine patient raises concerns about treatment access in Alberta\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Patients in Alberta have raised concerns about the coverage for medications offered by the province.<\/p>\n<p>When contacted by Global News about what migraine treatments are covered by the province, a spokesperson for Alberta Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services Adriana LaGrange provided an email statement that said:<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike other provinces, Alberta covers migraine treatments recommended through the national expert review process.
