{"id":572102,"date":"2026-03-31T03:45:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T03:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/572102\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T03:45:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T03:45:11","slug":"blanket-rezoning-hearing-enters-second-week-at-calgary-city-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/572102\/","title":{"rendered":"Blanket rezoning hearing enters second week at Calgary city hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fresh snowfall didn\u2019t deter Calgarians from showing up at city hall Monday as the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgary.citynews.ca\/2026\/03\/26\/blanket-rezoning-hearing-personal-experiences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">public hearing on repealing blanket rezoning<\/a> stretched into its second week.<\/p>\n<p>The marathon hearing has drawn significant public interest, with more than 500 residents registered to speak, according to Mayor Jeromy Farkas. <\/p>\n<p>Over 200 speakers were still waiting for their turn at the start of Monday\u2019s session.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Calgarians want a resolution to this, to get this done sooner than later,\u201d said Coun. Dan McLean, who supports a full repeal of the blanket rezoning bylaw.<\/p>\n<p>Farkas acknowledged the desire for a timely conclusion but warned the schedule is tight. <\/p>\n<p>Council is already committed to a regular meeting on Tuesday and a committee meeting on Wednesday, leaving Thursday as the next available day to continue the hearing. With Friday a holiday, any unfinished business could spill into next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor as long as we have Calgarians who would like to speak, we will hear you,\u201d Farkas said.<\/p>\n<p>Council is weighing whether to repeal blanket rezoning and revert to the previous land\u2011use bylaw. They are also considering amendments to the R\u2011CG district, which currently allows rowhouses and townhomes on land zoned for single\u2011detached homes. <\/p>\n<p>Proposed changes would reduce density, lot coverage and building height, and prohibit mid\u2011block row and townhome developments.<\/p>\n<p>Blanket rezoning made R\u2011CG the citywide base residential zoning district, part of a strategy to diversify housing types and address Calgary\u2019s housing shortage.<\/p>\n<p>McLean said he believes the recommended changes strike a balance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is being recommended right now, I can live with,\u201d he says. \u201cI think a lot of Calgarians as well.
