MRI machines need them to power today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6323575\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medical imaging<\/a>. They\u2019re in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfa-oxford.com\/knowledge-and-insights\/critical-minerals-in-low-carbon-and-future-technologies\/critical-minerals-in-defence-and-national-security\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">guidance systems<\/a> on missiles, the haptic feedback in <a href=\"https:\/\/gukmagnetics.co.uk\/2021\/04\/08\/neodymium-magnets-in-your-smartphone\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">your phone<\/a>, the motors inside surgical robots, and the cooling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.permag.com\/rare-earth-magnets-in-surgical-robotics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">systems<\/a> that keep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdsupra.com\/legalnews\/ai-needs-critical-materials-fast-but-9868792\/#:~:text=To%20maintain%20optimal%20temperatures%20in,rare%20earth%20permanent%20magnet%20production.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data centers running<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the rare earth magnet market itself is worth roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/PressReleases\/rare-earth-magnets.asp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$20 billion and heading toward $30 billion by 2030<\/a>. But the products that depend on those magnets \u2014 everything from fighter jets and medical systems to smartphones, robots, and wind turbines \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/discoveryalert.com.au\/china-rare-earth-dominance-supply-chain-vulnerabilities-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">represent<\/a> an economy worth trillions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Roughnecks-Riches-Start-Up-American-Fracking\/dp\/B0FCDBHGSW\" class=\"charts_banner_clicked charts_banner_add_view\" data-banner_id=\"38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"not_lightbox\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/book.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/chinas-new-rare-earth-and-magnet-restrictions-threaten-us-defense-supply-chains\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roughly 90% of rare earth processing, and 93% of magnet manufacturing, takes place in China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We already know what happens when that supply gets squeezed. When China tightened export controls on rare earths in 2025, Ford had to <a href=\"https:\/\/fordauthority.com\/2025\/05\/ford-explorer-production-temporarily-paused-over-rare-earth-magnet-shortage\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shut down Explorer production<\/a> because it couldn\u2019t get the magnets it needed.<\/p>\n<p>Ford CEO Jim Farley said the company\u2019s magnet supply was <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/13\/ford-ceo-says-rare-earth-supply-is-day-to-day-after-plant-halt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cday to day\u201d and \u201chand to mouth.\u201d<\/a> European auto suppliers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.automotivelogistics.media\/supply-chain-planning\/a-shortage-of-rare-earth-magnets-caused-by-limited-chinese-exports-has-potential-to-disrupt-global-supply-chains\/337586\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">(CLEPA) reported factory lines going dark<\/a> across the continent for the same reason.<\/p>\n<p>As REalloys\u2019 Head of R&amp;D Andy Sherman put it in a <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Interviews\/The-US-Takes-A-Huge-Step-In-Becoming-Rare-Earth-Independent.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent interview<\/a>: \u201cIf alloy supply is disrupted, production lines do not slow gracefully. They stop. Substitutions are rarely possible, requalification takes years, and readiness gaps appear immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s no substitute waiting in the wings. That\u2019s because the magnetic properties of elements like neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium are tied to where they sit on the periodic table \u2014 nothing else delivers the same performance. Which means whoever controls the processing controls everything downstream. That\u2019s the position REalloys has been building toward.<\/p>\n<p>The Bottleneck That Actually Matters<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a common assumption that the rare earth problem is about mining \u2014 that if the West just dug more rock out of the ground, the dependency would go away.<\/p>\n<p>But as Sherman <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Interviews\/The-US-Takes-A-Huge-Step-In-Becoming-Rare-Earth-Independent.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">put it<\/a>: \u201cYou can have rock in the ground and still be dependent if you don\u2019t control what happens after extraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the global commodities market, raw rare earth concentrates are often treated as a rounding error compared to the massive volumes of iron and nickel moved by Vale (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/VALE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYSE:VALE<\/a>) or BHP (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/BHP\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYSE:BHP<\/a>). However, the Pentagon and major aerospace manufacturers do not buy &#8220;rock&#8221;; they require finished metals and alloys\u2014materials with exact, repeatable specifications that can pass years of rigorous qualification testing.<\/p>\n<p>Raw rare earth concentrates trade on the open market. But what the Pentagon and major manufacturers actually need are finished metals and alloys \u2014 materials with exact, repeatable specs that can pass years of qualification testing.<\/p>\n<p>That final step \u2014 taking rare earth metals, combining them with other elements in precise ratios, producing alloys with specific properties, and doing it the same way batch after batch at scale \u2014 is where the real bottleneck sits. Almost nobody outside China can do it today.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why REalloys (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/ALOY\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASDAQ: ALOY<\/a>) acquired PMT Critical Metals with a metallization facility in Euclid, Ohio, and nearly a decade of rare earth and magnet R&amp;D with the U.S. Department of Defense and Energy. And it has locked in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2025\/12\/08\/3201374\/0\/en\/Blackboxstocks-Inc-Merger-Target-REalloys-Enters-into-Historic-Partnership-with-the-SRC-to-Establish-North-America-s-First-Commercial-Scale-Heavy-Rare-Earth-Production.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exclusive offtake covering 80% of production<\/a> from the Saskatchewan Research Council\u2019s Rare Earth Processing Facility \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2025\/12\/08\/3201374\/0\/en\/Blackboxstocks-Inc-Merger-Target-REalloys-Enters-into-Historic-Partnership-with-the-SRC-to-Establish-North-America-s-First-Commercial-Scale-Heavy-Rare-Earth-Production.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only operational,<\/a> fully non-Chinese processing plant in North America.<\/p>\n<p>Feedstock comes from North America, Brazil, Kazakhstan, and Greenland. In a world where China controls the vast majority of rare earth processing, REalloys has ensured they don\u2019t depend on Chinese inputs at any stage \u2014 not in the technology, the chemicals, the equipment, or the capital.<\/p>\n<p>That matters because defense qualification isn&#8217;t something you can rush. Testing and certification <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Interviews\/The-US-Takes-A-Huge-Step-In-Becoming-Rare-Earth-Independent.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can take years<\/a> \u2014 and there are no shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;re qualified into a program, you&#8217;ve built a moat that compounds over time. In other words, REalloys has already cleared a barrier that takes others three to seven years to even attempt. <\/p>\n<p>The urgency of this timeline is not lost on the broader industry. Even as Rio Tinto (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/RIO\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYSE:RIO<\/a>) and Vale (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/VALE\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYSE:VALE<\/a>) scramble to expand their critical mineral portfolios to include lithium and copper for the energy transition, the &#8220;refined&#8221; end of the magnet funnel remains dangerously narrow. Starting from scratch in this environment is a multi-year gamble that most industrial players are not yet equipped to win.<\/p>\n<p>Why the Window Is Closing<\/p>\n<p>Starting next year, every defense contractor in the country is about to face the same question: where do your rare earths actually come from?<\/p>\n<p>On January 1, 2027, the Pentagon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acquisition.gov\/dfars\/252.225-7052-restriction-acquisition-certain-magnets-tantalum-and-tungsten.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DFARS rules<\/a> will require defense contractors to prove where every rare earth input comes from \u2014 Chinese-sourced materials will be banned at every step, from the mine through to the finished magnet.<\/p>\n<p>Any contractor that can\u2019t show a clean, non-Chinese supply chain risks losing its contracts.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the demand side is accelerating. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/demand-for-magnetic-rees-to-triple-by-2035-mckinsey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McKinsey projects<\/a> that global demand for the rare earths used in magnets will nearly triple by 2035. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-critical-minerals-outlook-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IEA expects<\/a> a 50\u201360% jump in total rare earth demand by 2040, driven by electric vehicles and wind power.<\/p>\n<p>So the picture is this: a regulatory deadline that forces contractors to find non-Chinese sources, demand that\u2019s set to triple, and a competitive landscape where starting from scratch takes three to seven years. Only one Western company is already in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>What REalloys Controls<\/p>\n<p>When Ford\u2019s Explorer line went dark and European factories followed, the missing piece wasn\u2019t ore in the ground or even processed metals as most people think.<\/p>\n<p>It was finished magnets \u2014 components with exact, repeatable specifications that took years to qualify into those production lines. That\u2019s the chokepoint REalloys has built around.<\/p>\n<p>The Saskatchewan plant that supplies REalloys is expected to reach full production in 2027, starting at roughly 400 tonnes of refined rare earth metals per year and scaling to 600 tonnes by late 2028.<\/p>\n<p>REalloys controls the vast majority of that output through its exclusive offtake agreement \u2014 and its Ohio facility converts those metals into the alloys and magnets that defense and industrial customers actually buy.<\/p>\n<p>What makes REalloys\u2019 position particularly hard to replicate is which rare earths it has locked in. Dysprosium and Terbium are the elements that keep magnets functioning under extreme heat and stress \u2014 the difference between a magnet that works inside a washing machine and one that holds up inside a jet turbine or missile guidance system.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re among the scarcest materials in the supply chain, almost entirely controlled by China, and they\u2019re exactly what REalloys\u2019 Phase 2 expansion is built to deliver at scale \u2014 targeting 20,000 tonnes per year of heavy rare earth permanent magnets, which would make the company the largest non-Chinese supplier of these materials by a wide margin.<\/p>\n<p>At that scale, the supply chain starts to look different.
