The Alouettes and quarterback Davis Alexander have been waiting since July 17th for him to return to the lineup. The Als spent more than two months without their starting quarterback and struggled at times throughout his absence. Well, he returned on Friday night against the Calgary Stampeders, and he didn\u2019t disappoint. Alexander led the Als to a, 38-20, victory at Percival Molson Stadium.<\/p>\n
The 26-year-old pivot was outstanding from start to finish. He went 26-for-36 with 350 yards and one touchdown pass. He didn\u2019t turn the ball over. He just kept making impressive throw after impressive throw and didn\u2019t look rusty at all.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just awesome,\u201d Alexander said after the game. \u201cIt\u2019s always a privilege to play this game and to play in front of these fans. They bring it every single time. We wanted to put on a show, and we felt like we did. We left a lot out there, but I\u2019m proud of us and proud of the win.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
This was also a record-setting night for Alexander, as he set the record for the most consecutive wins to start a career for a starting quarterback at 9-0-0. He eclipsed Canadian Football Hall of Famer Danny McManus\u2019 record which was set in the early 90s.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s super cool [to get the record], but you already know what my answer is going to be,\u201d the Portland State alum said. \u201cThis 9-0 is not a Davis Alexander thing. It\u2019s a Montreal Alouettes thing. I\u2019m so proud of us and proud of our group. We\u2019ve been through a lot this year and we have a long way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s take a closer look at what happened in the game:<\/p>\n
Spreading the Wealth<\/p>\n
Alexander completed passes to six different receivers and four of them went over 50 yards in this game. The group was led by Alexander\u2019s roommate, Tyler Snead, who finished the night with eight catches on 12 targets for 115 yards. Snead is just 20 yards away from posting the first 1,000-yard season of his career.<\/p>\n
Cole Spieker, who missed the last two games, also returned with a bang. He finished the night with four receptions for 81 yards, including a screen pass he took 46 yards deep into Calgary territory.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re super deep at wide receiver. We have weapons everywhere,\u201d Spieker said. \u201cThe best thing about Davis is that he\u2019s going to find the open guy no matter what. It can be any one of us that can go off and get 100 yards. Davis played great all night and spread [the ball] around.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Charleston Rambo got the party started for the Alouettes on Friday night when he scored the team\u2019s first touchdown of the game on a 44-yard pass from Alexander down the right sideline.<\/p>\n
Rambo had no touches through his first 12 games, but he has scored in back-to-back weeks.<\/p>\n
Tyson Philpot also needs to get a mention here. The former Calgary Dino got to play against his twin brother, Jalen, for just the second time in his career. The Stamps\u2019 Philpot found the end zone in the first half and finished the night with seven receptions for 64 yards overall. Tyson, meanwhile, had six catches on 10 targets for 76 yards, but he was also able to draw two pass interference penalties on the Calgary secondary. Both fouls occurred in the Stamps\u2019 end zone, and they both resulted in Shea Patterson rushing touchdowns.<\/p>\n
Philpot and Snead also did a solid job of replacing injured kick-returner James Letcher Jr. during Friday\u2019s win.<\/p>\n
Patterson\u2019s hat-trick<\/p>\n
The third quarterback can often be overlooked, but Patterson has clearly found a role within the group. The former Michigan Wolverine scored three rushing touchdowns in this game, and they all came off quarterback sneaks.<\/p>\n
In just five games with the Alouettes, the 28-year-old has found the end zone five times, and he keeps finding a way to get a lot of positive yards on short-yardage plays.<\/p>\n
D Steps Up<\/p>\n
The offensive is coming away with all the headlines from this game, but the defensive performance can\u2019t be ignored either.<\/p>\n
The group managed to force four turnovers (one interception, one fumble, two turnovers on downs) and they sacked Stampeders quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. four times. The Als limited Adams to 238 yards passing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was electric,\u201d linebacker Tyrice Beverette said of the team\u2019s defensive performance. \u201cI feel like we played our best ball tonight. Of course, we left some plays out there, but it\u2019s football. All we can do is get back to the drawing board and correct the mistakes. I think we had a total team effort.<\/p>\n
Beverette, who was the top defensive player in the East Division last year, managed to come away with his third pick of the 2025 campaign in the second half.<\/p>\n
Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund had two of the four sacks on Friday night. He\u2019s now up to 11 on the season, which is one behind B.C.\u2019s Mathieu Betts for top spot in the CFL.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s next?<\/p>\n
The Alouettes will head into their third and final bye week of the regular season next week.
