Dale Earnhardt Jr. later joined the post-race discussion.

While the finish delivered a tight battle, much of the conversation focused on caution flags in the NASCAR Cup Series. Several yellow-flag periods slowed the race and broke up the rhythm. Hamlin, who led a race-high 292 laps and swept the first two stages, addressed the issue after the event.

His comments focused on how long caution periods affect the flow of the race and the viewing experience. The topic quickly gained attention across the sport, especially after another veteran voice joined the conversation.

Denny Hamlin Criticizes Length of NASCAR Cautions

Hamlin shared his insights on his Actions Detrimental podcast. He said the current length of cautions is too long and impacts how the race plays out.

“We’re running too long under caution,” Hamlin said. “We have to find a way to shorten them up. But we won’t shorten them up as long as we’re doing what we’re doing in the sense of ‘TV has to catch the pit stops live.’ OK, well then you’ve got to shorten your commercials or something.”

He also pointed to an example from a race at the same track. “I’m telling you my experience as a watcher: It was a single-car wreck, there’s not debris on the track, there’s no clean-up to be had, and it’s just yellow…yellow…yellow. I’m like ‘CHOOSE ALREADY!’”

Hamlin added that the extended caution periods are “hurting the watching experience.” His comments focused on how the delays reduce green-flag racing and affect the event’s overall pace. At Martinsville, several cautions interrupted long runs and changed strategy across the field.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Backs Hamlin’s View

Dale Earnhardt Jr. responded to Hamlin’s comments and agreed with his point. He wrote, “He’s right. It’s also chewing into the next stage and shortening up those parts of the race: taking product off the shelf.”

His response added another perspective from a former driver and current analyst. Earnhardt Jr. pointed to how caution timing affects stage racing. When cautions extend into the next stage, they reduce the number of laps under green conditions.

The Martinsville race showed this effect. A late caution for debris on lap 312 influenced pit strategy and track position. While it helped set up a close finish, earlier cautions had already reduced the amount of uninterrupted racing.

Martinsville Speedway Race Highlights Ongoing Issue

The discussion around caution length is not new, but the Martinsville race brought it back into focus. Stage racing, which NASCAR introduced in 2017, includes planned cautions that divide the race into segments. When additional cautions last longer than expected, they can further limit green-flag laps.

Television coverage plays a role in how cautions are managed. Broadcast partners aim to show full pit cycles during yellow-flag periods, which can extend the time before racing resumes. Hamlin suggested that adjustments, such as changes to commercial timing, could help reduce delays.

As of now, NASCAR has not announced any changes following the race. The issue remains part of ongoing discussions within the sport. With drivers like Hamlin and voices like Earnhardt Jr. raising concerns, the focus stays on how caution procedures may evolve in future events.

Dogli Wilberforce is a writer covering NASCAR, Formula 1, and the IndyCar Series for Heavy Sports.
