People in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon are being warned to stay away from all watercourses in the next couple of days, particularly near the Credit River, as local flooding could cause dangerous conditions.<\/p>\n

Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Peel\u2019s three municipalities and several other communities, issued a water safety statement on Monday evening alerting people to potentially unsafe conditions due to heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n

The statement, which remains in effect until end of day on Thursday, noted a weather system bringing mild temperatures and up to 15 millimetres of rainfall \u2014 higher amounts in some areas \u2014 entered the region late Monday and into Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIntense rainfall associated with thunderstorms may result in flooding along the Credit River and its major tributaries, especially near culverts, bridges and dams. Keep family and pets away from all watercourses,\u201d the conservation authority said in its statement.<\/p>\n

CVC officials said a water safety statement is issued when high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children and pets.<\/p>\n

The statement also noted that an additional 10 to 25 mm of rain forecast over the next two days will keep conditions near water unsafe.<\/p>\n

As a result, local streams and rivers could become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses.\u201d<\/p>\n
