Traders have expressed relief as a St Peter Port street has returned to normal following works to replace a burst water main which caused flooding.<\/p>\n
Dating back to 1946 the pipe beneath Mill Street and Mansell Street had burst twice in 2025, Guernsey Water said.<\/p>\n
The firm said while pedestrians were diverted during the two-month project, businesses had remained accessible.<\/p>\n
Teresa Roberts, owner of Pam’s Tailoring on Mill Street, said: “I hope it doesn’t burst again and I hope the road stays open for the rest of my life.”<\/p>\n
She said the disruption had been “a nightmare”, adding: “I’m glad it’s finished now.”<\/p>\n
Scott Cockburn, of Countree Mansell Stores, added: “There was a lot of disruption in the area, it’s definitely nicer when works aren’t going on, but they were obviously necessary.<\/p>\n
“It’s good they are investing in the infrastructure so it won’t have to be dug up for some time.”<\/p>\n
Guernsey Water said its “futureproofing” was the first project in a \u00a37.8m scheme to “upgrade ageing water and wastewater systems”.<\/p>\n
Teams from contractors Geomarine and Tarmac Services lifted “thousands of paving stones and deep granite cobbles” to enable “safe access to the pipe below,” it added.<\/p>\n
The company said it carried out the work<\/a> despite “the wettest February since 1976”.<\/p>\n Carl Falla, capital delivery manager, said: “This is the first major capital project of the year and will ensure a sufficient and resilient water supply for residents and businesses in that part of St Peter Port for the rest of the century.<\/p>\n “Proactive, planned works are always preferable to emergency repairs.<\/p>\n “This more durable plastic main will reduce the need for emergency interventions in the future.”<\/p>\n Guernsey Water has been asked for comment on the disruption caused by the works.<\/p>\n Follow BBC Guernsey on X<\/a> and Facebook<\/a> and Instagram<\/a>.
