Former Raptors president Masai Ujiri has joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, a WNBA expansion franchise debuting this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI \u200bthink women\u2019s sports is growing in \u200can incredible way. You see it in the WNBA, in soccer, in hockey, and to bring a brand like this for the first time to a city that \u200cI \u200bknow, a beautiful city that\u2019s \u2060passionate, that I believe \u2060in \u2014 I think this will really resonate,\u201d Ujiri told ESPN on Tuesday. \u201cOwnership is a unique opportunity for me and my family.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Tempo\u2019s ownership \u200bgroup is led by Raptors co-owner Larry Tanenbaum, with whom Ujiri won an NBA title \u2060during the 2018-19 season.<\/p>\n
Ujiri joined \u2060the Raptors in 2013 as executive \u200bvice president and general manager. He was elevated to \u200bpresident in 2016 and remained in that role \u200cthrough June 2025.<\/p>\n
He will be working alongside Tempo president Teresa Resch and general manager Monica Wright Rogers.<\/p>\n
\u201cMasai has been a mentor of mine since \u20602008 when I worked one of his camps in Africa,\u201d Resch told ESPN. \u201cWe connect often on professional and \u2060personal development \u200cthings. And since he\u2019s come on \u2060board as an owner, it\u2019s been \u200banother \u200clevel. He\u2019s got a lot of \u200bbig ideas \u2060and he also understands what it means to put a team together.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Tempo, coached by Sandy Brondello, are joining the WNBA this season along with the Portland Fire, expanding the league to 15 teams.<\/p>\n
