{"id":573405,"date":"2026-03-31T18:14:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T18:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/573405\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T18:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T18:14:10","slug":"baseballs-roboumps-are-entertaining-because-of-the-humanity-they-put-on-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/573405\/","title":{"rendered":"Baseball\u2019s RoboUmps are entertaining because of the humanity they put on display"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmneslcfm001q27p4aqni7qs4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The best-case scenario for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/29\/sport\/video\/homecoming-tokyo-series-baseball-vrtc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">baseball<\/a>\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/25\/sport\/video\/baseball-abs-system-explained-digvid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">automated ball-strike system<\/a> is that it\u2019s so seamlessly integrated into the flow of the game as to go unnoticed, while also creating viral-worthy moments for the way it exposes or incites intrigue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4pox00023b6q3lfm1ttx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Credit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/25\/sport\/mlb-ballpark-eats-baseball-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Major League Baseball<\/a> and the years of testing they put the system through before debuting it in the majors. Because, through the first series of the season, it is meeting both of those criteria.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4pox00033b6q9sxb1kzd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There were 227 challenges through the first 62 games of the 2026 season. That\u2019s good for a relatively conservative 3.7 challenges per game, less than the two per team allotted at the start of every game (teams retain correct challenges that result in overturned calls).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4pox00043b6qt4coge3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most of them were unremarkable successes of the system. They corrected \u2013 or not! Pitchers and batters are both worse than a coin-flip at issuing challenges \u2013 blown calls in a matter of seconds. If you weren\u2019t watching the game, or weren\u2019t watching closely enough, you didn\u2019t hear about them or notice them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy00053b6qhzcom7kq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In spite of a seismic crossing of the technological Rubicon, an abandonment of the centuries-old deference to the naked eye, a codifying and calcifying of the most atomic-level building block of the sport, baseball mostly just looked like baseball.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy00063b6qm3nultz8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A handful, however, served as standalone minidramas that ricocheted around the internet over the weekend.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy00073b6qpym736nl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CB Bucknor suffered an ignominious introduction to his robot supervisors to the tune of six overturned calls in a single game. The schadenfreude for frustrated fans peaked when Eugenio Su\u00e1rez of the Cincinnati Reds <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CBoxSports\/status\/2038019886987804681?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">successfully challenged two consecutive pitches<\/a> in a pressure-backed two-out, bases-loaded situation. That at-bat ultimately ended in a ground out \u2013 rendering it completely uninteresting if not for the gumption to challenge two pitches in a row and the eye to get it right.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy00083b6qw5lpa633@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe loudest cheers of the game \u2013 the Reds have hit two homers \u2013 come on back-to-back challenges,\u201d Cincinnati\u2019s play-by-play broadcaster John Sadak declared.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy00093b6qnwiowt8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For a crowd about to watch a promising inning fizzle out forgetably, that\u2019s incredible praise for the value-add of ABS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000a3b6qkpzucewg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Twins manager Derek Shelton got ejected for arguing with an umpire who had attempted to rule in his team\u2019s favor. After a called ball resulted in a walk to the Twins\u2019 Josh Bell, Orioles pitcher Ryan Helsley issued the rare pitcher challenge. The robots are unequivocal and perfectly accurate. And yet still the skipper got himself rung railing against an inconvenient truth to an intermediary who, presumably, would have just as soon let the Twins have their base runner and save himself the humiliation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000d3b6q5068kedb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe\u2019s arguing with the robots!\u201d Orioles broadcaster Kevin Brown marvels. \u201cYou can\u2019t defeat the robots!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000e3b6qh374d6zf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Is this not good theater?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000f3b6qfs9z6q00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those are examples of the new dynamics ABS has introduced into the rich tapestry of the sport. As the season unfolds we\u2019ll see how teams develop and deploy strategies and then adapt to one another. Along the way we\u2019ll learn something new or confirm what we already suspected about individual players.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000g3b6qwjzmqqa6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Randy Arozarena is just as audaciously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/randy-arozarena-wins-abs-challenge-confidently\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">self-assured when challenging a strike<\/a> call against himself as he is, well, all the rest of the time. Fifteen-year veteran catcher and captain of both the Kansas City Royals and WBC champ Team Venezuela Salvador Perez has an elite understanding of the strike zone. They\u2019re bad at this! It won\u2019t hold and they\u2019ll get better, but for now it\u2019s a goofy weakness to poke fun at, if you\u2019re so inclined.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000i3b6qtq3gsm4y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There will be controversies. Pitches that <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/cptowers.bsky.social\/post\/3miay773mfk2h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">just barely graze the rigid outer edge<\/a> of the strike zone prompted questions about how infinitesimally accurate the HawkEye technology that underpins ABS can be. Indeed, absolute perfection is elusive. But a \u201cbuffer zone,\u201d or whatever pedantic critics would offer as an alternative to accepting what the system dictates would introduce more questions, not fewer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000j3b6qcdnmjsw9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There will be unchallenged missed calls that turn out to be pivotal in the ultimate outcome of the game. And instances of a team having burned their challenges early only to need one late. These will prompt the most vociferous and pointed outcry. The demand will be for full ABS. Why allow any blown calls if the technology exists?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000k3b6qesuxr90z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The answer is simple: Baseball exists not to reach a definitive endpoint as efficiently as possible, but to provide a stage for imperfect effort. Every snapshot second can be analyzed from a multitude of angles with an elaborate decision tree driven by analytics behind each element.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000n3b6q0lre114l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The challenge system is more of that. More emphasis on the importance of situational leverage (when is the game really on the line) and count leverage (flipping the call on a 2-0 pitch is not nearly as valuable as doing so on 1-1).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000o3b6qe4je1nlp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead of eradicating catcher framing like full abdication to the robots would have, the challenge system adds new layers to the charade of trying to sell strikes. Can you convince not just the umpire but also the batter who has the ability to call your bluff? Would a catcher ever attempt to reverse-frame in an effort to elicit an ill-fated challenge that would rob the opposition of the ability to challenge later? (Probably not, but I like thinking about it.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000p3b6q2yiuzsz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The people who say baseball is boring are waiting for the ball to be put in play. But ABS encourages fans to watch each pitch closely, consider the stakes of the immediate situation carefully and compare your eye for the strike zone to that of a pro player. Avid fans will become experts on the way different counts dictate approach for both the batter and the pitcher.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnet4poy000q3b6quulw5cfd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is so much strategy simmering in every inhale before the action.
