Ben Shelton<\/a> arrives as the top seed in Houston this week with a double prize on offer on home soil.<\/p>\n If the 23-year-old wins a single match at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship<\/a>, he will move ahead of Taylor Fritz<\/a> and return to American No. 1. Fritz, currently World No. 8 with 3,870 points, leads Shelton by just 10 points in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, with the American battle finely poised heading into the clay swing.<\/p>\n PIF ATP Live Rankings (as of 31 March)\n<\/p>\n Fritz is not competing at the ATP 250 in Houston and has withdrawn from the upcoming Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters<\/a> due to injury. Shelton will return to American No. 1 for the first time since early February with a win over Zhang Zhizhen<\/a> in his opening match in Texas.<\/p>\n Both players are scheduled to compete later in April at the ATP 500 in Munich, where Shelton will be defending 330 finalist points. Fritz, however, did not begin his 2025 clay season until Madrid last year and has just 100 points to defend from the Spanish Masters 1000 event, though his participation will depend on recovery from his current injury setback.<\/p>\n That dynamic leaves the American No. 1 battle open across the next phase of the swing. Shelton saved three championship points to defeat Fritz and win the Dallas title in February, but has since struggled for form, suffering a third-round exit in Indian Wells and an opening-round defeat in Miami.<\/p>\n With an 11-4 record on the season, according to the Infosys ATP Win\/Loss Index, Shelton looks to find some rhythm on the Houston clay this week. It is the most direct route to reclaim the American No. 1 spot, but sustaining it will depend on consistency across an intriguing stretch of tournaments.<\/p>\n Shelton first achieved the feat in April 2024 as a 21-year-old, becoming the youngest American No. 1 since Andy Roddick<\/a> in March 2004.
