{"id":573658,"date":"2026-03-31T20:56:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T20:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/573658\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T20:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T20:56:12","slug":"mississauga-student-wins-ontario-engineering-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/573658\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississauga student wins Ontario engineering scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Mississauga student won a top Ontario engineering scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Mississauga, Marwa Zaryab, a second-year University of Waterloo engineering student, won Hydro One\u2019s\u00a0Women in Engineering Scholarship, earning\u00a0$5,000\u00a0and a\u00a0paid co\u2011op placement in Ontario\u2019s energy sector.<\/p>\n<p>Zaryab, 19, attended Rick Hansen Secondary School in Mississauga and found a passion for engineering and robotics through her older brothers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am the first woman to study engineering in my family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She chose to study systems design engineering because it combines different types of engineering to manage complex systems. While her program has a high number of female students, other engineering programs remain male-dominated, she said.<\/p>\n<p>People who study systems design engineering can go on to project management. Zaryab hopes to work in software or robotics engineering.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidyard-player-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774979732_869_awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu.jpg\" data-videoid=\"790139\" data-uuid=\"awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu\" data-v=\"4\" data-type=\"inline\" data-muted=\"1\" style=\"width:100%\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>        <img width=\"1024\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-30-at-1.55.02-PM-1024x513.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>      <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to work for a company that does good for other people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While a high school student in 2024, she restarted a school program that brought programming workshops for children living in a refugee hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Zaryab said the program was an outreach initiative from her high school robotics team, but it hadn\u2019t run in over four years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I found out about it, I really wanted to bring it back,\u201d she said. \u201cI really care about accessibility in education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 50 to 60 kids showed up. They were aged 3 to 14 and spoke little to no English, she said.
