TORONTO — Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> right-hander Cody Ponce<\/a> is expected to miss “significant time” because of a sprained ligament in his right knee, manager John Schneider said Tuesday.<\/p>\n Ponce had to be carted off the field<\/a> in the third inning of Monday’s 14-5 loss<\/a> to Colorado<\/a>, his first big league appearance since 2021, after he was injured trying to make a play on Jake McCarthy’s infield grounder.<\/p>\n Editor’s Picks<\/p>\n 2 Related<\/p>\n Ponce took an awkward step after misplaying the ball, then grabbed at the back of his knee and took a few more steps before going down in pain. He was able to get to his feet but left on the cart, briefly covering his face with his cap.<\/p>\n Earlier in the at-bat against McCarthy, Ponce caught his foot on the mound and fell down while trying to throw a pitch.<\/p>\n Ponce struck out three and walked one in 2 1\/3 innings before leaving the game, allowing one run and one hit. Thirty of his 47 pitches were strikes.<\/p>\n Ponce signed a $30 million, three-year contract<\/a> with the defending AL champion Blue Jays last December.<\/p>\n Toronto already has three starting pitchers on the 15-day injured list. Jos\u00e9 Berr\u00edos<\/a> and Shane Bieber<\/a> both have sore elbows while Trey Yesavage<\/a> is recovering from a sore shoulder.<\/p>\n Ponce went 17-1 with a 1.89 ERA for the Hanwha Eagles in South Korea last season, winning the league’s MVP and the pitching triple crown.<\/p>\n Milwaukee’s pick in the second round of the 2015 amateur draft, Ponce was dealt to Pittsburgh<\/a> for right-hander Jordan Lyles<\/a> ahead of the 2019 trade deadline.
