That will be a \u2018long-ish\u2019 run \u2013 but \u2018nothing speedy, nothing fast.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In other words, easy means easy and hard means hard \u2013 a training principle Cynthia says is key in her bid to shave another 20 minutes off her marathon PB. <\/p>\n<p>Related StoryWednesday Tempo \/ fartlek session <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Now it\u2019s time for speed. Midweek, says Cynthia, \u2018we&#8217;ll do some tempo pushes \u2013 between sevens, six 59s, and sixes.\u2019 Translation: it&#8217;s a speed-focused run during which she alternates paces, in this case within the 7:00-6:00 min\/mile (3:44 min\/km-4:21 min\/km) pace bracket. \u2018It\u2019s more like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a69695177\/running-workout-mona-fartlek-speed-endurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a69695177\/running-workout-mona-fartlek-speed-endurance\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fartlek\" data-node-id=\"41.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fartlek<\/a>, tempo-ish session,\u2019 she explains. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"45\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Fartlek refers to a flexible training method where you combine steadier efforts (tempo effort in Cynthia\u2019s case, meaning \u2018comfortably hard\u2019) with short bursts of higher intensity work. The idea behind this type of training is that you can adapt pace and duration depending on your goals and how you feel. It builds both your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65054794\/5-2-4-fartlek-walking-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65054794\/5-2-4-fartlek-walking-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"aerobic\" data-node-id=\"45.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">aerobic<\/a> (where oxygen is your body&#8217;s main energy source) and anaerobic (where your body relies on stored energy \u2013 mainly glycogen) fitness.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday More time on feet <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"51\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Thursday is usually a chance to fit in another long-ish run before a two-show day, which falls on either a Friday or Saturday, says Cynthia. \u2018It&#8217;ll probably be another 10-11 miles.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Friday Shorter run<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"57\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">With Friday being a busy work day \u2013 often a two-show day \u2013 Cynthia schedules in a shorter run that\u2019s around six miles (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a64835977\/average-10k-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a64835977\/average-10k-times\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"10k\" data-node-id=\"57.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">10k<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Saturday Long-ish run before the long run <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"63\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018I like a long-ish run on the day before a long run,\u2019 says Cynthia. Again, it helps increase general \u2018time on feet\u2019, and as long as she schedules it at the right time, Cynthia says it helps energise her ahead of a show.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday Long run<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"69\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">At the end of the week, it\u2019s time for \u2018the long run\u2019, which Cynthia says can be \u2018anything from [a] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a39582004\/half-marathon-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a39582004\/half-marathon-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"half marathon\" data-node-id=\"69.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">half marathon<\/a> to 20-something miles.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Extra strength work<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"74\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018[Reformer] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69819325\/reformer-pilates-vs-mat-pilate1\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a69819325\/reformer-pilates-vs-mat-pilate1\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Pilates\" data-node-id=\"74.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pilates<\/a> is my strength training,\u2019 Cynthia tells WH. \u2018I do that three times a week \u2013 sometimes right after a run.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"78\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Incorporating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"resistance training\" data-node-id=\"78.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">resistance training<\/a> into any running programme is important for supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a69915103\/run-faster-after-40-bodyweight-strength-routine\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a69915103\/run-faster-after-40-bodyweight-strength-routine\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength\" data-node-id=\"78.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength<\/a> and speed and reducing injury risk, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a40237617\/reformer-pilates-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a40237617\/reformer-pilates-challenge\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Reformer Pilates\" data-node-id=\"78.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reformer Pilates<\/a> can be a great option.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"82\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018I&#8217;ve been doing Pilates for about three or four years now, and it&#8217;s been very, very helpful,\u2019 says Cynthia. \u2018It strengthens the muscles, keeps the joints supple and [helps] mend imbalances \u2013 you&#8217;re working on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a64509362\/pilates-stronger-core\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a64509362\/pilates-stronger-core\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"core\" data-node-id=\"82.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">core<\/a>, legs and arms, but in a restorative way.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>How she recovers<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"87\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">On her non-show day, Cynthia ensures she\u2019s doing as little as possible outside of her session to allow both her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a70842171\/liz-earle-62-brain-health-diet-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a70842171\/liz-earle-62-brain-health-diet-changes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"brain\" data-node-id=\"87.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brain<\/a> and body to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a60499016\/post-marathon-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/a60499016\/post-marathon-recovery\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recover\" data-node-id=\"87.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recover<\/a>. \u2018And in the spaces between on the days when the show is, I try to make sure there\u2019s space for me to just stop, because I think it&#8217;s really important.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"91\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018But I also think it&#8217;s not just to do with what you do to your body, but what you put inside your body,\u2019 she adds. When it comes to snacks and supplies, Cynthia says she\u2019s \u2018like a little squirrel\u2019.
