As we know, Ilia Topuria is one of the most dangerous fighters in all of mixed martial arts. He\u2019s also one of the biggest stars, too, especially in Spain and Georgia. Of course, \u2018El Matador\u2019 has had a long road to get to the top, and while a lot of the focus is on his UFC White House main event<\/a> against Justin Gaethje, it\u2019s always important to look back on the journey that got these big stars to the dance.<\/p>\n

Topuria is the current UFC lightweight champion, but he\u2019s constantly chasing history. He is always looking ahead to what\u2019s next, and that drive and determination has been living inside him for many, many years.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview, Topuria spoke openly about what he went through in his childhood to help him prepare for the big time.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe lived in Georgia,\u201d Topuria told Charlas Adictivas. \u201cWe studied at a school there, and anyone who knows the culture of our country knows that it\u2019s tough. There\u2019s a constant confrontation with the kids at school, and you have to stand up for yourself a lot of the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re little, you don\u2019t know what\u2019s right, what\u2019s wrong, how to defend yourself, who to turn to, because since I was always a kid who didn\u2019t like confrontations in the street, I liked sports. And many people might think that because of the stereotype of practicing martial arts and MMA, that it can become aggressive, but the truth is that I never liked having confrontations with anyone on the street or in a non-sports environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut, unfortunately, sometimes you had to face those kinds of situations, and well, I felt afraid. I felt afraid because you\u2019d go to recess and the older kids would try to get a coin from you, or you\u2019d buy something, or they\u2019d make fun of you. And we all have crushes on someone in our class, and that makes you feel inferior, and in your own world, it awakens a sadness, and then, it changes how people think about you. You start to feel less, like you don\u2019t have that courage, until you start to speak up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout a doubt, you need those stormy moments in your life to really develop your full potential,\u201d Topuria continued. \u201cBecause if you always live in sunny days, I really think you don\u2019t expose yourself to situations that require you to truly summon that courage. That courage is not put to the test. And if everything is a bed of roses, in the end, why bother making an effort? So, whenever I face any difficult moment in my life, any storm, I always see it as a learning experience, something that will make me much better, and that\u2019s always how it turns out.\u201d<\/p>\n
