{"id":575913,"date":"2026-04-01T20:54:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T20:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/575913\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T20:54:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T20:54:09","slug":"video-val-therese-resident-captures-great-footage-of-a-lynx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/575913\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Val Therese resident captures great footage of a lynx"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While fairly rarely seen, Roger Desjardins said several of the wild cats have visited his backyard over the past few years<\/p>\n<p>A Saturday morning in March turned into a bit of a magical experience for Roger Desjardins of Val Therese.<\/p>\n<p>On March 28, he happened to have his phone on him when a lynx, the species of large wild cats that call the boreal forest home, ran across his backyard.<\/p>\n<p>While rarely seen because they are wary of people, lynx can be found throughout the boreal forest and their population is considered stable in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Desjardins, who lives on Kenneth Drive, said he has seen a few of the animals over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c We have seen lynxes several times in the past few years as well as bears and moose,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have also seen deer and coyotes and other smaller critters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ontarioparks.ca\/winter-royalty-the-canadian-lynx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">February blog post for Ontario Parks<\/a>, southeast zone biologist intern Christine Terwissen characterized lynx as the \u201cking\u201d of winter animals because they are active throughout the cold season thanks to their thick, soft fur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLynx can be found throughout Canada\u2019s boreal forest, which in Ontario generally means north of Algonquin Provincial Park,\u201d Terwissen wrote. \u201cHowever, not many people manage to spot them since lynx are notoriously wary of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cat can be identified by its unique ear tufts, much longer than those of bobcats, and their stubby black-tipped tails.<\/p>\n<p>While the animal itself can be hard to see, the tracks they leave behind are easier to spot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first way to identify a lynx track is by size,\u201d the post reads. \u201cThey\u2019re usually around 7-8 cm wide.
