{"id":575950,"date":"2026-04-01T21:25:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T21:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/575950\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T21:25:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T21:25:12","slug":"second-man-charged-in-fatal-qeii-highway-shooting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/575950\/","title":{"rendered":"Second man charged in fatal QEII highway shooting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RCMP have charged a second suspect in the <a href=\"https:\/\/calgary.citynews.ca\/2026\/03\/23\/heinous-act-alberta-rcmp-search-for-suspect-and-motive-in-deadly-highway-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fatal shooting of a man<\/a> on an Alberta highway.<\/p>\n<p>Birinder Singh, 22, was travelling with friends on their way to Banff when he was shot and killed on the QEII Highway south of Leduc on March 14.<\/p>\n<p>Police say 23\u2011year\u2011old Deon Libsekal has now been charged with second\u2011degree murder and accessory after the fact. <\/p>\n<p>Libsekal, who was already in custody on unrelated matters, was arrested in Edmonton last Thursday. He had previously been charged in connection with a separate shooting in Saskatchewan last year.<\/p>\n<p>An 18\u2011year\u2011old Lloydminster man, Jimmy Gassner, was arrested in Canoe Lake, Saskatchewan last Tuesday and also faces a second\u2011degree murder charge.<\/p>\n<p>RCMP Staff Sgt. John Brown says investigators do not believe the attack was motivated by hate or racial bias. Singh\u2019s friends previously told CityNews they thought the attack may have been hate-motivated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen no evidence to suggest this attack was motivated by hatred or racial bias against any specific group,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI\u2019m limited in what I can say at this time, but the RCMP have some understanding of the motivations in this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brown added that investigators also don\u2019t believe the shooting was an act of road rage.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"RCMP have charged a second suspect in the fatal shooting of a man on an Alberta highway.
