A major road in Mississauga\u2019s west end is being widened to four lanes in a project that will also include sidewalks and cycle tracks for bike riders.<\/p>\n

A 6.5-kilometre stretch of Ninth Line, between Derry Road in the north and Eglinton Avenue in the south, is being widened from its current two-lane configuration to four lanes (two in each direction).<\/p>\n

City of Mississauga staff are currently \u201cputting the final details on the Ninth Line construction contract\u201d and road construction is expected to begin near Eglinton Avenue later this spring\/early summer, Ward 10 Coun. Sue McFadden said in an update this week to her constituents.<\/p>\n

The councillor added that in addition to the extra lanes, new sidewalks and separated cycle tracks are also part of the project.<\/p>\n

Work will begin on Ninth Line at Eglinton Avenue and then move north towards Derry Road with completion expected sometime in 2027, McFadden said, adding she\u2019ll have more information related to the contractor, lane closures and scheduling in the next month or so.<\/p>\n

The Ontario government has contributed $20 million to the infrastructure project through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing stream of its Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, McFadden said.<\/p>\n

The detailed design for the Ninth Line lane widening project was approved in 2021 and also includes:<\/p>\n

Raised medians or centre left-turn lanes.
\nNew traffic signals planned for Sunlight Street\/Mahoney Gate, Tacc Drive, McDowell Drive and Beacham Street.
\nA new MiWay transit bus route.<\/p>\n

An earlier community update from McFadden noted the project is expected to take at least 18 months to complete.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be dust and noise, road and lane closures, and other traffic impacts and these will be communicated in advance of the related work as much as possible,\u201d the November 2025 project update stated. \u201cIn general, residents and commuters are encouraged to plan for delays and\/or consider alternate routes where possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

City officials have said a number of infrastructure upgrade projects across Mississauga, including the Ninth Line widening, are vital to the city\u2019s future as \u201cwe\u2019re building a safer, more efficient and better-connected city \u2014 one that respects our environment, supports our growth and meets the needs of our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n
