{"id":576144,"date":"2026-04-01T23:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T23:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/576144\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T23:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T23:22:14","slug":"stellantis-in-talks-to-make-chinese-evs-at-idle-brampton-assembly-plant-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/576144\/","title":{"rendered":"Stellantis in talks to make Chinese EVs at idle Brampton assembly plant: reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American automaker Stellantis is in talks with a Chinese partner company that could lead to electric vehicles being built at the idle Brampton Assembly Plant, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that Stellantis, which employs around 3,000 workers in Brampton, and Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology are discussing options for building \u200belectric vehicles in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Those discussions were \u200bfocused on the Stellantis plant in Brampton, which was shut down for retooling in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Insiders reportedly suggest the deal could be for assembly kits, with all the parts shipped from China before being assembled in Brampton.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis didn\u2019t confirm or deny the talks with Zhejiang, but reportedly said it \u201cis actively evaluating future \u200bprograms for \u2060Brampton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two companies have partnered on joint venture called Leapmotor International, and in 2023, Stellantis bought a 21 per cent stake in Leapmotor for $1.6 billion, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidyard-player-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu.jpg\" data-videoid=\"790139\" data-uuid=\"awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu\" data-v=\"4\" data-type=\"inline\" data-muted=\"1\" style=\"width:100%\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>        <img width=\"1024\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-30-at-1.55.02-PM-1024x513.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>      <\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insauga.com\/union-wont-let-our-guard-down-amid-positive-discussions-about-reopening-stellantis-plant-in-brampton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Union \u2018won\u2019t let our guard down\u2019 amid positive discussions about reopening Stellantis plant in Brampton<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Brampton factory was slated for production of the new Jeep Compass, but the company announced in October it was moving manufacturing to the U.S. despite years of assurances that the vehicles would be built in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 former workers at Brampton plant are now punching in at the American automaker\u2019s Windsor facility, while other employees waiting to work are receiving less than three-quarters of their regular pay.<\/p>\n<p>Some 20 other non-unionized workers will reportedly be laid off temporarily over the next year.<\/p>\n<p>In an update to union members earlier this month, Unifor Local 1285 President Vito Beato said he and other union reps met with Stellantis Canada President Trevor Longley on Feb 12, and says the meeting went well despite no news on what the company\u2019s \u201cbig plans for Brampton\u201d might be.<\/p>\n<p>The Stellantis plant property was gifted from the city to Chrysler back in the \u201880s before transitioning to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and eventually Stellantis.
