I lost fat, and I just felt so much more powerful in my body,\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n<p>1. Start light and build gradually <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While Liz follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a40218848\/progressive-overload\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a40218848\/progressive-overload\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"progressive overload\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">progressive overload<\/a> \u2013 gradually increasing weight or reps over time, which is crucial for building muscle \u2013 she highlighted just how gradual that can be. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018It\u2019s actually taken me four or five years to work up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a69933937\/how-to-squat-properly-after-40\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a69933937\/how-to-squat-properly-after-40\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"squatting\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">squatting<\/a> with 22kg [dumbbells] in each hand, doing maybe two or three sets of 25 repetitions,\u2019 she said. \u2018For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a37686986\/hammer-curl\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a37686986\/hammer-curl\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hammer curls\" data-node-id=\"27.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hammer curls<\/a>, I&#8217;m using 7kg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706203\/how-to-pick-the-right-weights\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706203\/how-to-pick-the-right-weights\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"dumbbells\" data-node-id=\"27.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dumbbells<\/a> for two or three sets of 25 reps, but I actually started with just 3kg, doing a few [reps and sets].\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Related Story2. They are technically weight training because you&#8217;re lifting your own body weight. When I started, I could barely manage a couple. Now, I do two or three sets of 50.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>3. Work at your own pace <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Stop the doomscrolling. \u2018It\u2019s not a competition \u2013 it doesn\u2019t matter what everybody else is doing in the gym or at home, what your friends are doing, what I\u2019m doing.\u2019 If you\u2019re working at your own pace, you can focus on form, which as Liz highlighted, is crucial for ensuring you\u2019re getting the most out of an exercise. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And if she had to sum up her strength training advice in one line? \u2018Start small, stay consistent and celebrate every bit of progress.
