LETTER: Why does Pride trump Easter at Surrey library display?<\/p>\n

Remember the Semiahmoo Library is full of young people over the Easter break, often delving through books and looking for inspiration. What they\u2019ll see on the shelf end displays is a permanent \u201cGay Pride\u201d selection of books.<\/p>\n
They\u2019ll also see an \u201cEaster display\u201d with books on making chocolate, knitting rabbits, cooking a holiday meal, the poetry of Maya Angelou, cake decorating, female self-acceptance, crocheting flowers and eggs; however, there hasn\u2019t been one book on the Christian worship of Jesus Christ who lived and died to bring salvation to all of mankind.<\/p>\n
No Holy Bibles. No journey of Jesus. No music for the holiday reflecting the hymns generally sung in Christian Churches at Easter, and nothing that reflects the religion of 53 per cent at least of Canadians, despite my constant requests and letters to librarians at every level.<\/p>\n
Last month\u2019s Ramadan display contained such titles as Islam Means Peace and Fasting for Ramadan, Notes From A Spiritual Practice. Clearly religious.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s a very well-stocked Indigenous display with many books describing how \u201ccolonialism\u201d has destroyed their lives and not one book on the many Indigenous leaders in seats of power in Ottawa and in provincial legislatures. Though there is a book on George Manuel, an amazing man who undoubtedly helped forward the cause of modern Indigenous power.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s just back up a little and recall ours as a country originally founded on the model of the British Empire. Ours is still a constitutional monarchy where King Charles III serves as the sovereign and Head of State, and even our new improved and repatriated Constitution begins with the Preamble, \u201cWhereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law\u201d \u2013 and that God is the God described full in The Holy Bible from which we derive many of our foundational legislation.<\/p>\n
Despite all this, there is not a word from any book about the most foundational biblical story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his resurrection from the dead, witnessed by hundreds, and which is the very source of the religion of a majority of Canadians, on display in the \u201cEaster display\u201d at the Semiahmoo Library despite numerous conversations, letters requests and more letters at all levels.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve asked that the \u201cGay Pride\u201d display be rotated like all of the others to no avail. In my view this amounts to promoting a Pride agenda over other subject matter.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m also asking that we stop discriminating against the very ideals upon which our reasonably free and prosperous nation is founded. At Easter we worship Jesus Christ, the son of God, whose death on the cross paid the price for our sins and through whom we have access, through faith, to a more abundant life here on earth and eternally.<\/p>\n
Certainly that should have a place in our \u201cEaster display\u201d at the Semiahmoo Library.<\/p>\n
